Blasting The Moon
For anybody who is interested:
Quote:
NASA's unique mission to bomb the moon started in June with the launch of the lunar crater observation satellite and its rocket. And tomorrow is the big day, early in the morning (6:30 a.m. ET) NASA TV will show the peak of the LCROSS mission.
The plan is to fire the exploding rocket into the moon. The rocket's impact will eject debris from the moon's surface, and to detect frozen water - if there is any.
Don't get sad if you don't have a telescope. What's neat about this mission, is that there's a variety of ways to follow it online.
You can watch it live at NASA TV: the 1.5 hour broadcast includes live footage from the spacecraft area, animations, and expert guests.

Sounds like fun to me! Where do you sign up for that job???
EDIT: I believe that quote is wrong...I think the "Moon Blasting" will happen at 7:30am ET...

That sounds like a great Idea. It's our first step in exploring the possibility of terra forming the moon which could lead to space colonization. Man what an age we live in. Space bombs! I wonder if it's in defiance of the treaty we signed with Russia not to put bombs in space?

It's a physical impact shot, similar to a meteor impact. No explosives required.

They are trying to find out for sure whether or not the moon has a usable water/ice supply. if there is, that will speed up the process of going back to the moon. From water, they can create breathable oxygen and also rocket fuel. its the stepping stone to mars and beyond.

It reminds me of the movie Time Machine when they do some blasting on the moon and it messes it all up and makes parts fall to Earth...

I watched the impact, or lack there, of last night on the news. I never saw the ploom they were describing.
Wonder if they will find what they are looking for, since my tax dollars helped pay for it. lol
