well, spent most of the day fooling with the timing. still no love. A few adjustments in the timing have made things worse so tomorrow I will go the other way......

Back in the GREEN!!!

Jetta is up an running, and quite well I might add!

After a few more Injection timing attempts, decided to crack the injector lines at the injector and bleed some more air out and whalaa she runs. New turbo can hit 25 PSI boost in a heartbeat. Gotta go easy on the skinny pedal! Feels soooo good to be driving her again.

Another update!

Tweaked the actuator rod on the new VNT turbo, which basically determines how much boost the turbo will produce. VNT stands for "Variable Nozzle Turbine". Anything over 25 PSI and I stand a chance of killing another turbo. Even though it can produce 25+ PSI doesn't mean the bearings, which are just bronze bushings, can handle the revolutions. It just spins too fast for the oil to do any good, and overheats and the shaft breaks. Ask me how I know

Anywho, Adjusted the rod so I wouldn't go over 25 PSI. The car has been running great but I still wasn't comfortable pushing it.

I started to email back and forth with "Malone Tuning", who are the original producers of the tune in my car. I connected my Laptop to the car and made some 3rd gear runs to get some baseline readings. Gotta admit, this was fun, starting at 1500 rpm and under WOT clear up too redline (4500 rpm) and going about 80 mph. ZOOM ZOOM. Each run was to measure and save specific data. So once I was done with all the runs I had some data to send to Malone. After they got a chance to look at it, they said it was an "Old" tune and sent me a new and upgraded "stage 4" tune that maxes boost at 22 PSI. The tune was free but it cost me 60 bucks to rent the tool to flash my ECM. Plus a $125. deposit. After the tune was flashed, they car was more laggy but never boosted over 25. So I adjusted the actuator again and got rid of some of the lag. Boost stops and 25 and settles to 22 and stays there til redline. Car runs good now and pulls hard! I think I am good to go and shouldn't have to worry about pushing it too hard.

And now some eye candy!

Just an update of the recent turn of events.

Took the Jetta on a road trip to Hershey PA, for a Union conference. She was running great up to this time, but oil pressure dropped to 20 psi an hour out of Hershey. Sweating this, I babied it there and back home, with no incidents. 450 miles round trip. Decided crank bearings were in order. Finished that up Monday night. Oil pressure is now 42 psi (2400 rpm at 70 mph ). I swear I work on this more than my Cherokee. Rough estimates put my mileage at 55 MPG .

Woot Freaking WOot

I think you'd been better off sticking with the Cherokee. Gas savings couldn't be enough to cover all the work you put into it....

Been lots of work put into the Jetta. Hopefully this will be the end if repairs for a while.

I agree. But it was my fault for the engine rebuild. I think I have all that in check now. But don't let my woes scare you off. These are good cars with good reps. Wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.
