Events: 1493 - Christopher Columbus left Spain with 17 ships on his second voyage to the Western Hemisphere 1915 – World War I: The Second Battle of Champagne begins. 1942 – World War II: Swiss Police Instruction of September 25, 1942 – this instruction denied entry into Switzerland to Jewish refugees. 1944 – World War II: Surviving elements of the British 1st Airborne Division withdraw from Arnhem in the Netherlands, thus ending the Battle of Arnhem and Operation Market Garden. 1957 - 300 U.S. Army troops stood guard as nine black students were escorted to class at Central High School in Little Rock, AR. The children had been forced to withdraw 2 days earlier because of unruly white mobs. 1965 - Willie Mays, at the age of 34, became the oldest man to hit 50 home runs in a single season. He had also set the record for the youngest to hit 50 ten years earlier. 1978 - 144 people were killed when a private plane and a Pacific Southwest Airlines Boeing 727 collided over San Diego, CA. 1992 - The Mars Observer blasted off on a mission that cost $980 million. The probe has not been heard from since it reached Mars in August of 1993. 2003 – A magnitude-8.0 earthquake strikes just offshore Hokkaidō, Japan. 2008 – China launches the spacecraft Shenzhou 7. Births: 1944 – Michael Douglas, American actor and producer 1952 – Jimmy Garvin, American professional wrestler 1952 – Christopher Reeve, American actor (d. 2004) 1961 – Heather Locklear, American actress and model 1965 – Scottie Pippen, American basketball player 1969 – Catherine Zeta-Jones, Welsh actress Thought this might be interesting... the "drive home" radio show I listen to does something similar.. I like to read this stuff to.
Also like to read laws that are still in effect but not enforced, like it's still illegal to use a gun to shoot the top off a can of beans in, I think it was, Texas.

That was the current day I decided to make the post... can't be "Today in History" if I post info from a different day. Besides.. if I had waited til a better day to do it I probably would have forgotten. And what is a better date?
