Default Best way to clean engine

I bought my XJ a few days ago and the engine is covered in old oil and crud. I need to replace the oil adapter o-rings. What's the best way to get all of the old junk off the engine. Is there anything particular to watch out for on the 4.0 as far as not getting wet.

I just use a can of degreaser and the local car wash. On a 91, you might want to take a plastic bag and wrap the distributor. Otherwise, wash the heck out of it while it is hot (softens up the grease deposits). I wash mine when it's running. Always have and never an issue.

Just spray the crap out of it with Simple Green. Just buy a windex sized bottle of it and make sure your engine/engine bay is cool and dry, and try not to get a lot of it on the paint. Then let it sit a bit and spray it off. But I would never wash an engine when its hot in my opinion.

They have stuff called Engine Degreaser at the parts store. Grab two cans of that stuff. Spray it on a cool engine and let it sit for about 30-40 min. Hose it all off with a pressure washer and then repeat until it's clean as a whistle.
