Tap on the starter with a screw driver or something and try starting it again. If you're not getting any clicking then I'd replace the starter.

If a few taps doesn't do the trick. You can try jumping the solenoid by jumping the top and bottom posts with a large screwdriver...

It could also be a weak battery or bad battery cables also. I might be best to test the battery first, and the cheapest to replace is the cables.

Just a few suggestions!

When it clicks, do you still have power? Turn your dome light on and try and start it. If the power gets cut to everything after you try and start it, it's most likely the battery or a bad connection to the battery.

you have a dead spot in your starter. When you ap it it moves it slightly and this helps you to start the jeep. Replace the starter.

You Know That You Drive An XJ...
when you don't find it annoying to bang on your starter to get 'er going!

It may be time to replace your starter, before a non-Jeeper see's you beating up your XJ,
and thinks that you're a nutcase!

now it seems like it just doesn't like my girlfriend lol, its starts just fine for me. maybe it has something to do with the fact that she leaves at 530am to go to work and the hamster inside the starter isn't awake yet

By the way if you have a long enough pipe you can tap the starter from above rather than crawling/laying underneath it. I had this problem a year or two ago and it got to where I had to tap the starter almost every time I wanted to start it. Eventually it gave out.. as will yours. Really not too difficult to replace, hopefully you don't have to do it while laying in the snow.. as I did.

That pipe idea is absolutely brilliant!!!

That's ALOT easier than removing 4 bolts...

Sometimes you got to do what you got to do... and perhaps their financial situation does not allow such a purchase at this time. In which case tapping the starter may get them by until they are able to buy the starter.

For the record I never said tapping the starter was easier.. in fact I said replacing the starter is "really not too difficult".

I wasn't trying to be a d**k.

I've banged on many of starters myself, and i'm full aware that "Sometimes you got to do what you got to do... "

I my case i've been jiggling my shifter daily, because i've had a bad NSS for the last year. I don't carry around a Pipe with me, but i do have a modified Starter Relay installed as a "back-up" device.

Just sayin'
