Default How Do You Do a Radiator Flush on a 1990 Cherokee??

I bought the Prestone Flush 'N Fill Kit. I figured out where to put the T hose connector (which hose it goes to...) at least I hope I did...

It now says to put the Diverter Tube where the radiator cap would be, on any other car I am sure it is pretty obvious, but our 1990 Cherokee does not have a radiator cap and I don't think it is supposed to go into the resevoir tank either...

Maybe I just bought the wrong kit?

I see a lot of discussions about flushing the coolant system but not how.

Can someone shed some light on this??

Thanks
Heather

I'd pull off the hose to the expansion bottle, place it into a 30 gallon garbage can and turn on the water.

I need the water to go to through the engine...is there some thing in the hose that makes it not just go straight to the bottle instead of straight to the engine?

I don't know if it makes a difference but the jeep also has a/c.

If you installed the T into the correct heater hose, start the engine and turn on the water and it will flush out.

Please dispose of the spent coolant properly.

Hello Heather,
I am the technical manager at prestone. My service information shows you do have a radiator cap, it should be located on the drivers side top of the radiator. let me know how it goes or if you need further information

Ok...have you ever seen a 1990 jeep cherokee? there are 4 openings in the radiator:
1. inlet hose
2. outlet hose
3. drain cock
4. temperature sensor

there is no radiator cap on radiator anywhere
There is a "cap" on the reservoir bottle
Can you send me a picture of what you are talking about?

Thanks

Sorry, my bad. I was looking at a friends 1991 Cherokee. the older ones like yours have a pressurized resivour.
To flush, drain the system and fill with water and super flush after removing the thermostat and replacing the housing. Splice the t fitting in the heater hose that goes to the nipple near the t-stat housing. Run the car for 15 minutes with the flush installed and then drain. Remove lower hose and place in a big bucket. Hook up garden hose to the flush tee and turn on the water for about 3-4 minutes to flush out contaminents. Drain completely per instructions below. The refill instructions below are very helpfull as your system is difficult to fill. Fill with a 50/50 mixture of your favorite coolant.
Factory service instructions-
DRAINING COOLING SYSTEM

WARNING: DO NOT remove the cylinder block drain plugs or loosen the radiator draincock with the system hot and under pressure. Serious burns from coolant can occur .

NOTE: DO NOT WASTE reusable coolant. If the solution is clean, drain the coolant into a clean container for reuse.

Remove expansion tank pressure cap.
For access to radiator draincock, remove radiator grill mounting screws and remove grill.
Attach one end of a 24 inch long X 1/4 inch ID hose to the radiator draincock. Put the other end into a clean container. Open draincock and drain coolant from radiator.
Fig. 19 Draining Coolant - 4.0L 6-Cylinder Engine

Drain coolant from engine by removing the drain plug and coolant temperature sensor on left side of block.
REFILLING COOLING SYSTEM

Remove draining hose. Tighten the radiator draincock and the cylinder block drain plug(s).
Fill system using a 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze. Fill the expansion tank half way and install the cap.
NOTE: Removal of the heater hose at the thermostat housing until coolant is visible, will facilitate easier refill.

Operate the engine with expansion tank cap place. After the engine has reached the normal operating temperature, shut the engine off and allow it to cool.
Add coolant to the tank as necessary Only add coolant when the engine is cold. Coolant level in a warm engine will be higher due to thermal expansion.
