Default np 242 to np 231

Is it recomended to swap a 231 in place of a 242 and would the shifter have to be modified?

It depends on application, but the 231 doesn't hang quite as low and some will tell you it's stronger. The only modification to the shifter needed is to replace the indicator strip to reflect the loss of fulltime 4wd. Make sure you get one from the same year range.

Well, it depends, Most would say that the 242 is the strongest and best t-case put out for jeeps but there are ways to make the 231 stronger than any of them.

Thanks guys, the problem with my 242 is when you shift into 4x4 it goes into part time but when u shift to fulltime or 4 high it seems to go into neutral. but in 4 lo it seems to shift in but no power to front wheels. I think the chain is broke.
