The NP242
Why are these things so hard to come bye ??? I am guessing not many XJ's at all have them.

The NP231 was the "standard" tcase on the XJ's, and so they're the ones that are most often found.
The NP242 was an optional tcase. Most of the time it can be found on the "Limited" XJ models. Otherwise, an XJ had to be optioned with it for it to have it. Both of mine have the NP242, but they're also '00 and '01 XJ Limiteds. I've seen many "Sports" with the NP242, but usually they were specifically ordered with the NP242.

I dunno, around where I live, most people hold on to them like gold........from what I understand from another member on here is that they have made them all the way from the late 80's or early 90's until they stopped making them in 2001.

When I did my 4x4 swap in my Mj I was looking for a 242, around here they are like freakin gold. The Jy will sell you a 231 dirt cheap but a 242 will set you back your first born.
I have a 242 in my Pioneer aside from it constantly getting stuck in Part time it is a great great case.

Well, that may be a hard question to answer because it largely depends on the area you live in.......You can find one in Michigan from as low as $200 all the way up to $400 or so depending on the mileage and stuff.

Yeah, that is not too bad if it didn't have a million miles on it. I understand the expensive aspect of it though. The 231's are a good t-case still and with a chain and sprocket out of a 231c, you could have one bullet proof t-case. In case you did not know, you should be able to find a decent 231 for around $100

What GC's will work with the 242 for my 96XJ ? I see alot of them in the yard. What about driveshaft issues as well, can I simply use my 231 driveshaft or do i need to find a XJ 242 driveshaft ?

242
To get one from a GC, you may want to call a junk yard to be sure they'll match up....GCs usually had different trannys but the t-case shold still bolt up to yours......any t-case around your year model should work.....the only issue you really may have problems with is driveshaft length......it would be best to get a driveshaft that was used on the 242 because the u-joints may be different sizes (prolly not tho but someone else on here should be able to tell you for sure. Also, you would want to get the selector indicator for your shifter too while you are at it.

Got the bezel already. I heard the 242 for the 96 is a 1 year compatibility thing.

How do you tell which one you have if you don't know. Since everything I have read on here, I have just been learning but hate to assume anything.
I have a Sport, and it's been said they were offered with both options. How do I determine this for sure? Serial #?
