That is one of the funnier ways I have heard that described.. Its a very good description also...

You get quoted as part of what I am writing here but its more directed at everyone in the last few posts.
Lets look at the way multi-viscosity oils work.....
When an oil is multi-viscosity rated...say 5w-30 vs. single weight SAE 30, The number before the W is the effective viscosity at 0 degrees. Whereas the later number is the effective viscosity at operating temperatures.
In contrast a single weight is the same effective viscosity at all temperature ranges.
Now at operating temperatures there is no difference in the effective viscosity of 5w-30,10w-30,SAE30 or any other oil with a 30 viscosity rating. Now at a given temperature this does not mean that all 30 weight oils will be exactly the same viscosity. What it means is that all 30 weight oils will be within a certain range of viscosity.
Colder temperatures is where the multi-viscosity oils really shine through. But the same idea applies. All 5w-X oils are in the same viscosity range.
So switching to a 10w-X oil from a 5w-X because you are getting lifter noise at cold start up is going the wrong direction.
89 Jeep Guy.... To put it simply oil is not oil anymore. 25 years ago, 90%+oils on the markets were very close to the same thing. But that simply isn't the case any longer. With increasing EPA regulations, and advancing automotive technology today's lubricants are VERY different than even ones five years ago. Most of the cheap oil is now API-SM rated The levels of protective elements in the SM rated oils have dropped due to EPA regulations to levels below what flat-tappet camshaft engines (like our Jeep motors) need for wear protection.
