promoting a looong engine life
what can i do for my xj to best ensure a long engine life.i know change the oil every 3,000.but is there anything else?
im at 116000 mi and i would like to hit 200,000+,cause of the money im putting in i dont wanna build it then the engine die a year later,i know the 4.0 is strong and durable, but any life extending tips you guys know about that you wanna share?
i just drove it 2,000 mi,AND WILL BE DOING ANOTHER 3,000 MI,across country back.then i would like to get another 5 years out of it AFTER all this.

Just keep up on maintenance. Tune ups, clean air filters, and cooling system--def don't want to drive with an overheated engine. Driving style and habits are also important. The more you beat the engine. the shorter its life will be. Accelerate at a steady pace instead stomping on the skinny, for ex.. Also try and avoid short trips that don't get the engine up to proper temp.--that can cause a sludge problem.

IMHO, stay away from washable air filters. They cost too much, take too long to clean, and you can't be sure you've done it exactly like the factory requires and for 99.999999% of your driving, you really don't need the extra airflow.
OTOH, paper elements are cheap, readily available, and clean more efficiently.
Change your oil filter on EVERY oil change. If you have F.I. then use a injector cleaner a few times a year (2 doses made a big difference in my gas mileage!!!)

It's all about general maintenance with these things. If you treat it right, it will treat you right. Make sure you keep fresh fluids in it (change them on time), keep up with anything that may need repairing before it gets too bad, and just drive it like you always do. These things tend to run forever regardless of maintenance, there are tons that I've seen with over 150-200k miles and the owners barely change the oil. They just work.
