How hard is it to change a fitler on a 98 xj automatic aw4? Can someone walk through the steps for me.

Locate the drain plug and remove it, after the fluid drains remove the pan and clean. Remove the 4 screen bolts and pull screen. Clean off any old gasket,install new screen and gasket. Reinstall pan and fill. I think its only like 2 quarts of dexron since your just changing the screen. Most people just drain and refill. Its really not a filter but a screen.

Pretty much what xjjeepthing said other than I think it takes more than two quarts, not sure though.
Also watch out for the 2 piece fill/dipstick tube, It has to come apart to get the pan off. I believe it has an o-ring seal where it comes apart. No big thing, but something to watch out for.

depending on the length of time between filter changes it's probaly best to just drain the existing fluid and save the $$ for the upcoming transmission change. If he goes that far and has to, which is sounds like, replace the transmisison check with B&M transmissions-THEY ROCk!!! a bit pricy butt your are young andd it's WELL worth the money.

FYI, mine took 4qts when I did it. I learned the hard way that the dipstick tube comes apart. I didn't completely remove the pan though, just kinda had it hangin out.
The screen was pretty gunked up when I did it, shifted a lot smoother afterwards.

Changing the filter is easy.....dropping the pan was a royal PITA. No matter what we tried, we couldn't get the tranny pan dipstick tube to separate. We used a small tubing cutter and re-attached it with 1/2" rubber fuel line. No leaks and it should be much easier to remove the tranny pan next time.
