Well not necessarily. I have a drive shaft for a 1986 that normally lists for $2250, but I can drop the price to $2000. Hell I'll even throw in free shipping.

Unless that shaft is a custom, super high-tensile, pro class racing shaft (they can get that high and higher) then I would say grab the d-shaft firmly and insert it into the butt of the person trying to sell it.

A "REALLY GOOD" drive shaft - even custom built should not cost you any more than $600 or so - and that is a seriously well built d-shaft designed for abuse.

Regular old driveshaft should run between $200-$350 brand new depending on length, material, design etc.

Whoever your friend was talking to was trying to take him for a ride.... the '86 XJ the shaft is going into isn't even worth that much

If it's a stock shaft, they're worth about $20. I routinely throw them out. To have one built would cost a couple hundred easily, as the yokes are worth a decent amount, and the tubing is going to be worth about $10/foot, the u-joints are worth something, and labour isn't free. If it's a small shop that does driveshafts as a side job, it often costs them more as the tubing is cheaper in full lengths, etc.

If the guy wants to do a SYE, and needs a shaft, an XJ front shaft can be used. Even to have one lengthened (if need be), is not overly expensive from a shop that does lots of driveshafts.
