Hello, I am new to the jeep world and have been looking for a used cherokee for a daily driver, and i found a 92 model I hope to go look at this evening, I was wanting to know if a 92 was a good year and what i need to look out for on it and check, thanks for any input.

I have a 91 with 4.0L and 5spd about to hit 200K. It has a few issues but has been very dependable in the 6 or so years I've had it. Not having much info about the truck you're going to look at it's hard to tell you much. Just a quickie, check the oil and make sure it doesn't look like a chocolate milk shake, look at the tires for uneven wear patterns, look for fluid leaks in the engine, transmission and transfer case as jeeps are notorious for them. Good luck!

Well thanks for the input, I am going to pass on this one the odometer and speedometer don't work and the guy really can't tell me much about it, like he is hiding something, but I will keep looking.

Good eye, I would pass on anything that your gut tells you to pass on. I always recommend finding the newest, lowest mileage XJ you can afford. Check the front end of the frame rails from any cracking (not as typical in non-lifted, non-wheeled XJ's), check for rust, make sure the trans and tcase shift smoothly, pretty much all the basics.

These things run pretty well as long as they have been serviced regularly.

thanks for the replies, yesterday I looked at a nice 95 country, with 144,000 miles on it, I liked it the seats look like pillow top seats, they are comfortable, it was stock, the engine had some leaks and they wanted more than I thought it was worth it was at a dealer, I would rather get one from a private seller, I will keep looking.

^ YES.. i bought mine from a actual jeep/Chrysler/dodge dealer.. they pretty much only had NEW vehicles and they had a few trade ins, i paid over 4k for mine, and that was with 169,000 miles, 1 owner. mechanically everything was AWESOME. but i went on Craigslist a month later and found the same colored 97 for 3000. live and learn..

I would pay up to 5,000 for a really nice one, from someone that has had it for a long time, but I am trying to stay away from dealers. I am trying to take my time and find a decent one, I want it to be my daily driver, I have been looking on craigslist, and ebay, so far nothing around here.

I got my 95 xj sport (232,000) off craigslist for $1500....took me about a month of looking and comparing to get comfortable with what was out there and what a good price was....I have since put about $1000 into it, but now have a rig I feel comfortable driving anywhere...after fixing the oil leaks I haven't had to add oil in 2000 miles...

That is something else I was wondering how many miles is resonable, because I have seen alot of them with over 200,000 miles on them, and was wondering how many miles most people get out of them?

I just sold my '01 Limited with 130k for $5k. Bought it 2 years ago for $5500 with 95,000 miles.

They go for nearly $7000-8000 with more mileage, and no Limited trim package at dealerships around here regularly.

I just talked to a guy with a 2001 with 142,000 miles and a new engine at 138,000 miles, it has new tires and rims, he said everything works on it, he bought it to tow behind his RV, and his wife doesn't like it, she wants a honda. He is asking 5500 for it is that resonable if it is in good condition, I told him I would like to look at it tues, or weds. It is alittle over 2 hours away from me.
