Best Cherokee year?
Im starting to look for a new one. I doubt i'd ever take it off road, but i would probably lift it. I want atleast a 1990+ one so it is easier to find upgrades (cold air intake and so on). I know the engines typicaly last till around 300k with out too much troube, but i know nothing about the lifespans of transmistions or axels. Likewise, Im only 17 and know very little about fixing cars, so any of these problems would end up being very costly. Are there any certian years you guys would recommend/warn against?
Thanks everyone!

96 is my vote. i guess i'm a little biased though. In 94 side impact beams were added and in 96 the whole unibody was strengthened. i like the older body style over the newer, more rounded body.

I personally like the 97+ years, this is when they went to a steel rear hatch and I like the interior better.
However; whatever you end up getting you can learn to work on any of these years. You need to get yourself a good repair manual and take your time. Do research if needed and gather up as much helpful information before you tackle the project. If you can put together a large puzzle you can work on any of these older Jeeps.
If you don't take a chance to try something new you will not know if you can do it. So with that said good luck on your new purchase and have fun working on it, you will appreciate the car that much more if you bust a knuckle every now and then on it.

Anyone know when the interior changed? Like my 87 doesnt have the airbags and its lights are on a pull out switch on the dash. I like this arangment better than the grand cherokees ive seen with the two controlls on the steering wheel and cruise controll crap

I like the 99's, even though I have a 01. The 00-01's are known for the misfire issue that's very hard to diagnose and fix. The 99's have a dist and plug wires and also the better hp dana 30 front axle.
