Default Remove axle housing to change R & Pinion?

I've always wanted to learn how to change Ring & Pinion gear sets; now that I have two jeeps I can justify the tool expense. My question: does the benfefit of having the housing out of the vehicle when changing gear sets and rebuilding the rear end justify the additional work of pulling and re-installing the entire assembly? Thanks.

In a word: Heck yeah!!!!

Sorry, that's two words.

By getting the axle out, you can clamp it to a pair of sturdy sawhorses to steady it while wrenching on it.

Just use your old axle U-bolts and shock plates.

it just makes it easier on your back so your not hunched over benieth your jeep. but is doable installed also. Just have to make sure its strapped down to whatever you put it on, like fadedglory said. Cuz that axle will want to twist when you pull your yolk bolt off.

but if your changing the front and the rear together i would suggest leaving the axles in.

My line of thought was that since he's doing his first ever, then having them out would make the learning process easier.

And he could do one, then the other.
