Bandaid for what is the worry ... I'm hoping it's no more than low on fluid / needs a fluid change. Had all fluids done when I bought it about 3 years/ 35k miles ago.

Just relax and enjoy your vacation. Same thing happened a couple of years ago to me with the commander. Just tell yourself you'll deal with it IF something happens.

Ahh, that's some good advice right there y'all. However the paved driveway and free time is calling to me as well. might be a good time to take care of it anyway. Just gotta buy a socket and some fluid and a foil pan. But, whatever, it's vacation!

A change of oil may correct the problem especially if you're on the low side. I use oil stabilizers in my tractors to help prolong the life and quiet the gears. Most of them increase the "stickiness" of the oil and don't really increase viscosity. The increase to the oil clinging to the gears help quiet things down. In a transmission that is going bad it may extend the life a few miles. As others have said enjoy your vacation and if spending a few minutes under the Jeep changing the gear oil helps you do that then go for it!.
