Default Project- '85 Cherokee Chief

Decided to start a build thread for this bad boy! We bought a set of 29" super swampers off of a friend and decided to cut out the fenders so we had plenty of clearance when it flexed.

Before

After

With the tires on (we haven't done the back yet because we are going to use a plasma for that)

This is me with my Yeep!

Here is boyfriend crawling under Yeep!

We decided we should put something over the rough edges so we don't kill small children when we drive around town!

Ford? That's too bad. Well, if you've got to, I'd say 5.0L out of a '89-'92 Mustang.('87-'88 5.0L made the same power, but the 89-92's include a MAF, and the '93's had a drop in power of about 20hp). Lots of those engines around, usually at a fairly reasonable price, and lots of parts and aftermarket support available.

How hard would that be? What about Mopar motors?

It would take some fabrication work for sure. I think Advance Adapters makes something to go from Jeep Trans to Ford or Chevy engines. So that makes it a little easier. But motor mounts, crossmembers, electrical work at least...It would be easier if you could get a donor vehicle to swap alot of what you'll need over, but it is a decent project however you decide to go.

It really depends on what your project goals are though. What is it that you're looking to build, how much do you plan on spending, what is this vehicle going to be used for (DD and trail rig, trail rig only, mud, rock, bush...)

For Mopars, there's lots of 5.2L engines out of ZJ's, Dakota's, Rams...
Then there's the 4.0L. It was an option in just about every Jeep vehicle of the last 20+ years...

Nice a girl that likes fords got with a 302 they are stronger than a 5.0. Yes I know a 5.0 is thet same size as a 302 and some parts swap but they are different in ways.

Actually...a 5.0L and a 302 are the same engine...just 2 different ways of expressing the engine displacement. But there are various models of the 302 (or 5.0L if you will)

Have you ever pulled a 5.0 mustang and set it beside a 302? They a re the same in most areas but they have their differences. The stroke is a different length on one of them than the other and other minor differences. Or you can look at it like this way a 5.0 is a different era of 302. Similra to the difference from the d44 and the d44A, the d44 is stronger than the d44a is most cases. But I wouldn't put a 5.0 mustang motor into something you where goin to wheel it just wouldn't hold up as good as a 302 out of an older model stang or truck.

The first shop I worked in that's all I did. Pull engines. All I am telling you is that 302 or 5.0L is just two different ways of expressing the same amount of displacement. Much like a 454 is also a 7.4L, a 350 is a 5.7L, or my 4.7L is 287 Cubic Inches.

I agree, there is more then one model of a 302. There is a 302 that was put into the Mustang, there is a 302 that came in the trucks, there are other 302 models as well...All of them displace 5.0L, however, like you said, there there differences in the engines. I'm not trying to start an argument about Ford engines, just trying to squash any confusion about 5.0L vs. 302 cu. in. engines.

If you differentiate between the engines by calling one a 5.0L and one a 302 that's fine for your purposes. But if someone is going to shop for an engine, they are normally categorized by displacement. To try and explain what I am trying to say, follow this link...All 3 of these engines have 302 cubic inches of displacement. All three of these engines have 5.0 Liters of displacement.

Now, let's get back on topic!

I'm not trying to aurge either but there is a difference between displacement between the 5.0L and the 302! It just so small of a difference they call them the same. If I can find the the site with the spacs I will pm them to you but back to topic.

You could drop in an another 2.8 out of an 84 s10. Is yours a thottle body or carb?
