Making a difference....one step at a time. "ARK"
I'm not sure if there's any interest in something like this but i'm starting a little personal project.
I went down to buttermilk falls on 18 in Beaver Falls (near turnpike ramp) for the first time recently. I didn't know this place existed and I've lived here for 30 years. It's a beautiful place with a waterfall.
Despite the awesome scenery, there's garbage and litter all over the place. There's broken glasses from beer bottles and stuff like that.
Now I'm 30 years old now and I haven't accomplished anything exciting in my lifetime and I've decided to do something about that. I made a personal goal to use my spare time in cleaning up nature's hot spots or any location where there's garbage littered everywhere. My first project is Buttermilk Falls and then I will be out searching for more locations to clean up. I might not be making a huge dent in this litter issue but I'm doing something and something counts.
I'm going down tomorrow to start the cleanup. If anyone in the area is interested in tagging along and helping, you are welcome.
If you guys know of any places in the western pa area that need cleaned up or restored, please let me know.
Thanks
Chris

Thats real cool of you mudd. If I were closer I'd help. I did this near my house. There is a channel that comes off the lake. Used to be an ice factory back in the day when they cut into winter ice on the lake. This was way before any of us were born. Anyway, the channel area has been a dumping ground for a ton of people. Stuff from people sitting back there fishing, illegal activities and just pure dumping. My brothers and I took the whole weekend cleaning it out and even taking out some of the larger fallen trees to help the flowage again. Needless to say, over night some terror kids went in there and re-dumped everything we didn't get into the truck to dispose of yet. That was a terrible feeling to go back there and see. My brothers and I planned on re-doing the project until a few weeks later the town came through and re-cleared it and made it look real nice.
Let us know you progress.

Well you can't go wrong helping the environment in your local area, or anywhere for that matter.
That's cool and for sure a worthy cause.....So let me date myself here.
This add came out in 1971 I believe that puts you in diapers. I remember seeing this on TV.
Anytime I see someone litter I always say don't make the Indian cry, the majority of the time I get a blank stare.
This is what I am referring to.................

I went down there yesterday to clean up and noticed a BIG pile of used tires were thrown down into the trench next to the waterfall. I can't imagine why someone would do that. I mean it's a 30-40 foot walk on the trails to that spot. These people went out of their way to walk down the trail and toss tires over the edge. It would've been much easier just to toss em someone's trash.....
So I have to wait till monday and have my gf come down to help me. I don't want to fall down this trench into a muddy pit and no one's around to witness it.
I'm not sure what to do with the old tires though. Not familiar with where to dispose of them.

Very good on you Chris, thats awesome. If I every get around to getting out near you I will hit you up and give you an hand.
Get in contact with the forest rangers and/or BLM and they may give you a hand with the trash fees if any or can even get people involved to help. The forest rangers usually will help with the dump fees for all the trash we clean up from the trails.

Chris. Very cool to be doing this. Tires are hard to dispose of. I would first contact the County Sheriff or whatever you have there and ask them if there is some official thing you can do to dispose of them for free. Most land fills don't like tires. Some places will recycle them. There is a power plant somewhere that burns them and makes electricity. At least, try to work with the county. Maybe if you snag em, they will dispose of them for you as part of their regular clean up.

Take those old tires out into the field behind your house and pour gasoline on them and then with a lighter...........oops wrong forum. J/K
There are some tire recyclers out there that will take them for free. They remove the steel and grind them into rubber pellets used for playgrounds and other various uses.
Being that I am in a large city it is a bit easier for me to find places like that.
