Advice: Cherokee or Grand Cherokee?
Hi All,
Hoping to solicit some advice. Not trying to start a religious war, just hoping to get the benefit of your experience.
My daughter is coming to visit for 8 weeks, and will require transport while here. I'm thinking I might be able to use this trip to justify buying myself a 4x4 cherokee. When she leaves, I have a new toy....
My current cherokee is the 2wd non-grand version with the I6. Does anyone have any thoughts on standard cherokee's vs the grands? A few folks I've spoken to have not been complimentary on the grands. I'm hoping to get input from a more serious group of owners.
Thanks.
S.

As far as Grand Cherokees are concerned, ZJ's (1993-1998) are the most affordable and there is tons of aftermarket support for them...WJ (1999-2004) are nice for a dual purpose street/off-road vehicle. They're quite comfy, there's a decent selection of lifts available from mild to wild, and have a little more power, and a little less fuel consumption vs. a ZJ. WK's (2005+) are better for a mainly street driven vehicle as they're an IFS vehicle, and there's not a ton of aftermarket support for them. Grand Cherokees also have a V8 option which is important for some people...
Cherokees have leaf and coil springs where Grands have 4 coil springs Both setups have their pros and cons...
XJ's also make a great dual purpose vehicle, and I think the best thing to do is take a couple Cherokees and Grands out for a test drive and see what works best for you. Both Cherokees and Grand Cherokees can be made into pretty capable off road rigs, so it really comes down to personal preference.
Later.

Are you saying you can't lift a Grand??? Now YOU are trying to start something.
A Grand does cost more to lift and skids cost a little more but every ZJ owner knows that the XJ guys are envious A grand is usually plusher, rides a little better plus they have a little more room. If you go with the 4.0 don't expect a race car but it will get you there with no problem.

My opinion may be a little bias but I would say go with the XJ (cherokee). They are incredibly simple and tend to last forever if properly maintained.

Yes I'm saying you cant lift a grand! Show me one show me a grand with a inch lift in the front and 2 1/2 in the back!
Xjs are just cheaper to offroad and plentiful which means you can pick one up pretty cheap.

Like everyone has said, this is a toss up.
Of course my opinion is going to be biased, but I say go with a Cherokee (XJ). I have modified, wheeled, and spotted ZJ's, and I always find XJ's to be more simple.
I also know that Grands tend to suffer from more "quirks" than XJ's do.

Hmm.. having both... XJ makes a darn good wheeler... Especially a Renix model. Keep the CPS and TPS operating and you will never worry about it leaving you stranded.
But... having a 5.2l, a big cushy seat and four corner springs makes a drive on the interstate ALOT more enjoyable. Not to mention absolutely kick butt heat and A/C. And that Infinity sound system....
