I had a 1987 Nissan Sentra and raced my buddy in his 1985 Ford Tempo, my speedo only went up to 120 and I had it peged past that. It was a tie. I have never driven that fast since, I have only had my jeep up to 80 while passing.

By the time I was 21 I knew I needed to drive something higher and slower.
I started with a 1973 Ventura (Nova basically) swapped out the 250 straight 6 for a 327. Got her up to 135 mph and someone pulled into my lane! Bastard! Rear ended him after I had slowed to about 80 mph. No more Ventura.
Got a 1972 Nova from a neighbor for $500(?). Put the 327 in that and continued to drive it up wards of 120 mph, just more careful. It had L60, yellow traction bars, it was fun. 600 CFM Holley carb, mild cam, double roller chain, blah blah blah.
Several several near misses, so i got a 1980 long wheel base Chevy truck and sold the Nova. Later traded in the 1980 Chevy for my first 4x4 1983 Chevy Silverado. Put a 4 inch lift and 36.5" tires. It is more fun to be high all the time then fast some of the time.
This is one of the reasons I was laughing at the salesman that asked me if I wanted to test drive a Viper. Plus he told me he wanted to go fast. rofl.
Truth be told, this Jeep is too fast for me. The older I get the better I am about controlling myself. Helps to have a wife and kids. Just the thought of injuring or killing someone else's family keeps me in line, most of the time.
The fastest I have ever been is about 200 mph, but that was 500 feet off the ground.

hmm gee i dont know. my car is said to go 140mph or more. i have a few mods. i know it does 135mph when i race a hatch civic with a gsr motor and was even with him then ahead then even.my car runs a low to mid 13 as it is with not alot done to it but i think with the new gears im lookin at high 12s.nothin drives like a 5.0 mustang. ive worked at shops and car lots and i like the 5.0 the most even if ists not the fastest 300ft lbs of torque at 3grand is a mean car when you wanna put the hammer down and the power is right there at a low rpm unlike most v8 cars. my speedo only reads 85 since it was the law to only read 85mph for domestics back then

I had my 76 pinned at 85mph and still accelerating on the way to Portland one day. It had a 6" lift,38" Michelin XMLs and 4:56 gears. The last picture gives you an idea as to how large it was.

Stateside? In high school, we had a project car brought in - someone wanted a G/N twin turbo V6 wedged into a 1968 Beetle. Took a whole semester.
I was the only one who was nuts enough to drive it (I was already a skydiver, a SCUBA diver, a pilot, ...) and I knew most of the cops in northern IN anyhow. So, I called a Statie buddy and had him run pace for me - I wasn't sure we had the speedo right (turns out we did.)
Top speed? 170. That was with about 300# of plate ballast welded to the floorboards and a spoiler - and it still lifted at that speed (stock trim, a Beetle will start to "lift and drift" at about 85mph or so.)
Ever? Got sent to Germany for a high-speed driving course, and taught by the BKA (Bundeskriminalampt - German National Police Force.) Using one of their cars, I hit 247. I wanted to hit 250 - but there just wasn't anything left to give on that particular vehicle. Damn...
Of course, falling straight down at 150+mph has its attractions as well, if you want an adrenaline high.
I've since gotten married, had kids, and I can feel the life vigorously lived catching up with me, so I've slowed down considerably. But, I can still burn out when I need to! I haven't forgotten how, I just don't feel the impulse to do so anywhere near as often.

Oh boy ... who started the pissing contest?
Are these anything like "fish stories"?

theres not much story to a 5.0 mustang its fun its fast and trying to max it out is pointless i like seeing how quick i can reach a certain speed as apposed to how fast i can get a car. alota cars can go high speeds, but its how quickly you get to that speed thats the thrill called torque!.
carrol shelby said this "torque wins races...horsepower sells cars" my jeep doesnt have much of either but its alota fun out in the woods!and thats more fun for me these days than 13 seconds on a track and waiting hours to make a run or 2, breaking something and having to figure out how to get it home!
