Use clean brake fluid, please!!
Guys and gals,
Today I pulled the master cylinder off my XJ as a flushing didn't help my no brakes problem.
And what I found was terrifying.
I'm not sure what the oily black sticky junk in my system is and I may not want to know, but the front piston is stuck, the bore is black and gooey.
I'm going to use alcohol to see if I clean the mess up if the piston cups and bore don't have any scoring I'll try reassmebling it.
This is the worst master cylinder I've ever seen as far as foreign material in the fluid. If you're wondering why I haven't had to check it before now it's because I always had great brakes before.
For your own safety, the safety of those riding with you and for those on the streets and trails around you, keep clean fluid in your brakes.
I thank God my brakes failed in the driveway and not when some child rode out in front of me.
Budd

I'm guessing you know what you're doing, but for anybody who may not be sure, don't just use anything to clean a braking system.
If you're going to use alcohol, make sure it's a denatured alcohol, methyl alcohol, carbinol, wood alcohol, or some type of brake clean. Do not use a mineral based alcohol as it may damage hoses, tubes and seals in the braking system.

I might, considering I have about 40 years of various types mechanic experience.
Denatured or 91% works as long as you flush with brake fluid after it dries.
Keep spray brake cleaner away from all plastics, rubber, or your eyes.

Sorry, but it didn't strike me as funny and I read it several times before asking if I had offended you.
My apologies for misreading it.

Yep. Stop on a dime and give you $85 change in Obamabucks (the equivalent of 8 1/2 cents in 1957 dollars)
It took a pint of high strength alcohol in a spray bottle to clean the rubber cups and pistons and most of a can of brake cleaner to clean the cylinder, inside and out.
I'm going to mix a few oils and other stuff common to engine compartments with some fresh brake fluid to see it anything causes the goo to form in a pan.
Maybe it will help someone in the future.

Ohhhh...Science experiment! Sounds fun!
Throw some heat at it, if nothing happens at room temp...

I shouldn't have to heat it much if any underhood temps never, usually (since we are talking about an XJ here) get over 200F.

Yep, when I couldn't get the pedal to pump up and maintain it it meant that on the street I'd have to pump the brakes for a block before I could make a stop.
That'd be a lot of fun if: you're coming off a nearby 10,000 foot mountain, a kid runs out in front of you, a motorcyclist or car pulls out suddenly, etc.
Obamabucks: Dollars added to the current monetary system by printing / coining excessive unsupported monies and spending by the government without any sense of responsibility to what it will eventually do to our economy. Often considered by conservatives to be of less valuation than the money used in the game "Monopoly". Pronunciation key: "funny money"

Does your Xj have dual reservoirs?
BTW, I like the Obamabucks joke. I shared it with a few others and found it amusing too.
