Default 97-01 Passenger window fix

There is a common window issue with 97-01 xj's. The passengers will lose control of window operation and only the driver's side window control switch panel will open them. Being me and my luck, I ended up with this issue. I figured I could just let it go and deal with it but having someone tap you on the shoulder to open/close/open/close/open/HURRY UP AND CLOSE IT BEFORE MUD GETS IN/open/close your windows while you are 4wheeling gets old. I finally stopped myself from doing other mods to the jeep and get this fix done. I was informed on this possible fix when I first bought it a couple years ago and I saved the link. Since it's an untitled document, I copied and pasted it below.

The fix will mention to use a splice connectors but I didn't cuz I was too lazy to go out and buy some so I just used my soldering skills and connected a 3" wire between the yellow and tan wires and soldered em up. Worked like a charm and now all my passengers can open and close their window.

================================================== =======

When the passenger windows quit working on '97 to '01 XJs, and the drivers side still works, the problem is the safety lockout switch on the drivers door.

There have been several fixes available but they don't always seem to work and are fairly time consuming to do. The following is a simple method, generally taking less that 15 minutes to complete. As long as the problem is the safety lockout switch, it will work every time.

What you'll need....

1 - 4" length of 16GA wire (any color)
2 - Red splice connectors
Tools to remove the kick panel

Remove the drivers side kick panel. Locate a large white connector with 3 wires, colored yellow, tan and black and disconnect it.

Using the female end of the connector just removed, take the red splice connectors and the 4" length of wire, connect it between the YELLOW and TAN.

Reconnect the connector and push back into the kick panel.

Reassemble the kick panel and you're done.

================================================== ======================

And by the way, it's a nut so it takes a socket wrench to get it off. You will know what I'm talking about when you attempt to remove the kick panel. I couldn't see so I ripped it off.......and then got the hint in picture #1 (above) on the floor mat. It was too late though......so avoid rippin it off like me.

Mine is 93' and passenger window will go down but not up.

Wonder if I have a bad switch or if this will work for me.

This mod is only for the models with lockout switch. I think what happens is the lockout malfunctions and stays locked so you bypass it with that wire and that disables the lockout. It sounds like this is not the fix for your issue.

so does that mean my daughter can open here window even if my window lock is on? or does this only go for the passenger side front? i would do this, but do not want my year old playing with the windows.

I think it overrides the lockout so it's unusable. I haven't tried the button since the install though.

You could place a switch in the jumper wire for you to control up on the dash. A little more work and wire but probably safer with little ones riding with you.

You only need to use one red splice connector. Just put it around the yellow and the tan wire and press it in... there's no need for a jumper wire.

Also, the kick panel nut is 11mm.

Thanks for the tip, this was a quick solution to an annoying problem.

pull the master switch assembly out of the drivers door and look at the contacts inside. if you have any corrosion in there it could cause issues. be sure to get some dielectric grease first so you can clean up the contacts rear good and regrease them.

Hi guys. It seems this would the solution to my Grand Cherokee 98. Among the windows, the remote door lock, mirror and light does not work at all. The alarm can not be activated.
When the door panel is off and the switch is manipulated, then it works for almost 2 or 3 days and then again nothing works. Driver side operates fine.
Mud do you think your solution would solve all my probems??
regards
Wilsori
