Default Roof rack accessories

Well, I made some brackets to hold my shovel on my Yakima roof rack. The trouble with this basket is that there is no bottom horizontal bar. For vertical support you need to get creative.

I whipped up some shovel brackets awhile back, cheap (just a couple buck in hardware) and they were fine. Never came loose, and no vibrations, but...........It was a real struggle to take the shovel on and off. The wingnuts were jamming on the bands holding the shovel. The studs were bolts that were not fixed, so a wrench was needed all the time. I wanted function, and looks, so I rebuilt them recently. Heavier material all the way around, better fit, more clearance for the bolts and nuts, and I welded the bolts so no more wrenches!. Its doing great, plus I have primer and paint on it now.

The first pics are of old, the second of new.

Nice bracket. You can try using a spring between the nut and bracket so the nut isn't directly against the bracket but still tight.

Now, as for the hi-lift jack....

- I heated and beat some steel plate scrap into a u-shape around the same size pipe as the rack rail.
- Then I bent a lip 90deg at the bottom.
- 2 holes were drilled through both parts of the u-shape, bolts will go through there to clamp the mounts to the roof rack.
- A piece of round stock was welded to the back of the mounts to catch on the vertical bars of the basket and hold the mounts vertical with the weight of the jack on them.
- Then I drilled a hole in each near the center, (in a carefully marked and measured spot that lined up with the holes on the jack).
- In these^ holes I pushed a 1/2inch bolt through and welded it on both sides. They are the studs for the jack to go on.
- Washers were placed on the bolt studs, then a rubber grommet I am using for a noise-suppression spacer, then the jack, then a washer, lockwasher and large wingnut. Done.

The only noise I get from either tool mount is the jack rattling a bit. But thats just from the jack design, not the jack in my mounts. I will try to stuff it quiet with something later, I only hear it so far at idle rpms.

Bump.

Im building a new mounting sys for my rack, and this time its gonna be a gutter mount. No factory rack involved lol.

.125" plate with 3/8" hardware, preferably roundhead Allen-type hex drive, with square nuts so I can better weld them to the plate.

1" (dia yet to be set in stone) tube welded to the main plates on each side, (angle yet to be determined exactly), and then the rest of the clamp assembly.

Thanks to JCROffroad for the design basis. (Yes, I kinda stole the design idea from them, but its not exact, and Im not selling, so....)

Should be great, now I need to check some more measurements and call it good.
