Lightbulb Late model XJ aux switches...

Ok, so I am now in the process of gathering parts for a switch panel build for my 2001 XJ. I have seen thread after thread of the older XJs with switches installed in those nice spots the factory left bare.

Now I want to see where you put your auxiliary switches in your later XJs.

I have looked at the ashtray option, but I want to see some other spots. Right now mine are under the dash near my shins. I don't like it, and its kinda hard to reach. I am thinking on spots higher in the dash.

Show 'em, post 'em, whatever, just be sure its the later ones...

I had my Aux. light switch mounted underneath the dash like yours. I recently drilled a hole and mounted a toggle switch about 3-4in directly underneath the factory light toggle.

Ok, so the areas I circled in red are where I am looking at as switch mounting location options. I have no idea if it can even be done in those locations, I have only looked so far for convienence. I will be taking a closer look at these spots later. Today maybe? hmmm
Has anyone mounted switches here? or looked at doing so?

I added a pic to my original post, I chose that location because it's convenient to reach and had easiest access for install.

So its pretty bare behind there? There is space for switches, wires, etc...?

Thanks. I am planning 4 just like yours but with red safety covers. All in a row next to each other...well see.

You should just pop off the under dash trim piece and have a look, it's enough room for a switch or two, but not much.

Yeah, eventually it will come to that...I have to find the time first. But I need to tear down the dash and have a look around, and while I am at it I may just decide to put switches in where I find the best spot. Do it all at once. Thanks.

the best places that i thing that are also the cleanes are the factory locations. i also have an 01 but it didnt come with fog lights so i sourced out an oem bezel that came with the fog light switch and wired that up to my existing switch wiring and its tied into the factory lighting system so they turn on with the light switch. also if u have or can get an overhead console, u can take out the controls and use thin acrylic and make that into a switch panel. im goin to use that for my roof lights. i also used the lil spot infront of the 4wd shifter and put a switch for my rear fogs. ill post up some pics for u.

Thanks, I don't have an overhead console...but I do have this...

and I don't want anything down by my 4x4 shifter, just picky personal preference I suppose... But it is an idea, so I will keep it in mind.

I have factory fogs, but the lights are gone. I am looking for cheap replacements to put in there, at least for the moment. Well see, Im kinda holdin out on that one. So I don't want to cut that up yet.

I have thought about the ashtray, and it is a serious possibility. I just cant decide...

Thank you very much, that was quite helpful.

Hopefully I can find time to tear down my dash in a week or so. I wanna see whats back there...

I have picked up some red flip covers for toggle switches, and some led indicators....in GREEN, they should look badass. I really need to find a location for the switches with room for the indicators too though. So with that update, I am bumping this for anyone else interested or with input. Thanks.

I am in hte process of getting some switches. I have four covers, but now Im thinking I want 6 switches, plenty room for growth, cause I only am using 2 right now. Plans are in the making for use of at least 4 probably 5. and thus 6 is not out of reach.

Anyone have good options for finding the cheapest switches. I want 6 plain 2 position toggle switches, maybe 2 with covers, and 4 without. 20amp for 12v, and I think I will only need 2 hookups even with the indicators...
Maybe one rated for 30 or 35 amp would be ok too.

Clear as mud? Where is the best place to get your switches?

Thanks all.

I bought 2 switches at work yesterday. I got a good deal on napa 786132 switches, they are 7/16 mounting dia with a red flip cover already on them. Now I need either 4 more, or 4 matching switches without covers, but I cannot find any identical switches that will fit the covers.

Small project, extra drama....lol

New update, slight change of plans, new info....lol

I ended up buying a total of 6 NAPA 786132 switches (see pic) and will be putting them in. I also have the 4 LED indicatiors still, and will be using them. But I may want 2 more so every switch has one. Not necessary yet though.

I have procured 2 cheap LED worklights that are going to be aux reverse lights. They fit perfect for my roof rack. Look for a future installation update on them in my build thread.

Now I have moved onto the wiring of these future lights (plus the 4 more I will be getting for the front...) and aquiring the components to build a wiring harness for each. PITA, but cheaper than an entire working harness with components I wont need anyhow...

KC relays on Amazon are not bad, and I would need 3 I think (reverse set, and 2 for the 4 lights up front). http://www.amazon.com/KC-Hilites-330.../dp/B0002MAE0M

As soon as I find time to tear my dash apart and do the switch panel installation, (I know, I know, I have been saying that for forever), I will give a solid update.
