4wd Conversion...
Ok, first thing. Im sorry if this has been covered somewhere else, didnt see anything...
Now have my 2nd jeep(first was 97 TJ, 2.5L), and my 1st 4.0(95 XJ)... so far its got 256K and running great, but the tranny is slipping....and its 2wd...
How much, ballpark(parts and labor?) and migraine factor, would it be to drop in a 4wd AW4(?) and either just leave the front drive shaft out or just go ahead and fully convert to 4wd??? i want to go 4wd, just hadnt wanted to pay for everything at once...
if i can do it that way i will but if i have to go ahead with the full conversion, can someone list everything that will need to be done as well( drive shafts, brackets, will i need a new front axle?,transfer case, etc, etc)
Thanks Ya'll,
Blake

Just buy a new jeep man. It's NOT worth it to dump that much $$$$ into such an old jeep.

well heres the thing...
im tired of buying other peoples problems... so i figure i will hold on to this one and just put my money in it...its already lifted, good tires, wheels, and im really screwed as far as selling it, cuz no one wants a 2wd with 256K on it.
so i figured put a new tranny, transfer, axles, and eventually lockers, armor and finally a new engine... and ta da... my ultimate h2 recovery vehicle..lol.. which i had with my 97TJ...lol omg you shoulda seen that... little 4cyl pulls out h2.. i swear that never gets old.....
also if anyone has info on cutting my roof... i've seen it on a few XJ's but have NO idea where to start or who to go to... would love to take it off in the summer( kinda like TJ hardtop)...???

Well, what you can do is try and buy a cheap cherokee 4x4 off craigslist or something. As long as the tranny, tcase and front axle is good then go for it. If you want to get all the parts from a junkyard, it is going to cost you way more then buying a donner cherokee.

Best bet is to buy another XJ that is close in model year and start swapping parts.

one more question... after maybe a month after buying and driving this jeep, i should've asked this sooner, but my sway bar is sitting in my closet... i know they have disco for on the trail, but is there any potential problems from running just without any sway bar????
also im having 2nd thoughts on just chopping the top... cause i DO need cargo space... maybe a large sunroof?? i plan on putting a roof rack on so i would still have protection from a roll but would also keep frame stable ... right??
i wish i had some of the knowledge that some of ya'll have on here, and ability to do things myself, but i just dont know stuff like , doing the conversion myself or swapping the D30 for a 60 or 8.25.... anyone around Atlanta area wanna teach me some more about mechanicals???

If it's the rear swaybar, then you can leave it off. You should, however, always have your front swaybar connected.
If you cut the roof off, you'll have to add some sort of bracing and/or cage.

I don't recommend driving without a front swaybar. Leaf springs are much stiffer than coils, that's why it's usually OK to run without the rear swaybar (some XJ's even came from the factory without the rear swaybar). The front swaybar adds much stability to the vehicle, so I"d put it on.
