AX15 if you want a manual, and you'll need the clutch pedal, and all of the associated parts fro that as well.
AW4 if you want an auto. Get the TCU and tranny/transfer case harness from the donor rig. There is more aftermarket support for the NP231J than for the Np242J. You'll need the linkage to. If you are planning on lifting the rig install an SYE while the t-case is out of the rig. Don't forget to grab a new center console. |

Transmission Control unit. It's the computer that controls the tranny.
Data plate onthe side of the tranny. ![]() IMAO- From what i've gathered so far, the AW4-4WD /(AX-15), with the NP242 really can't be beat for a daily driver. This is what i have planned, as i want to make this conversion go as smooth as possible. Besides, this is the combination that is in most "donor" rigs that i've checked into. I suppose that the bottom line is, it's all personal preference, i guess? Sorry i couldn't be of more help to you... ![]() Please keep us posted on your progress, huh? ![]() BTW- All transmissions should be clearly tagged!

Dude you live in Florida. Putting a np242 is a waste IMO. You don't really need full time 4x4 all the time cuz it never snows there. I would just get the np231 cuz it has the most aftermarket support.

shhhh dont say that so loud! lol i know that the np231 would be good enough for my mudding situations down here in olds ville but Im pulling the tranny and tc out from a junkyard, and if I find an AW4 with a 242 on it im taking it, all ima do is an SYE and I know they have that for a 242 along with a master rebuild kit if i need it.

Alright guys, I got a big tax return coming soon so that 4wd convo is coming real soon! Along with a few other goodies
. I'm starting to stake out some jeeps at my local junkyards for a good set of tranny/tc, but one quick question, I can't seem to locate the TCU, I'm pretty sure I've looked directly at it but I don't know what I'm looking for, any help?

Not here lol the cheapest 4wd jeep I found was 900 for an 87 that was in horrible cond
ition, most go for over 2k if they are in decent condition, and for 400 I can all the parts I need for my conversion. Lol

if your looking to do this and you have a 95 you want to make sure that you find a doner jeep from 92 to 95 as the wiring plugs are the same. 91 some plugs are different and in 96 other mods made to the jeep can just run you into longer swap aswell.
any cherokee with the auto will just bolt int your jeep from thoes years. As far as computer you do not need one yours will work and its the same tranny. the reason you need the wiring harness is for the t-case. your jeep will not have the 4x4 indicator lights in the dash so if you want them git that from the doner aswell. if you go with the 242 remeber tha the 242 is not as strong from the post 91 Chry jeeps as the older amc ones. they tend to fly apart. so if you go with a 242 rebuild it and make sure its good before you install it. good luck and have fun.
