New exhaust
Ok so my muffler is rusted and leaking so its time for a new one. Since I already have a k&n air filter and bored tb I think its time to open up the rest of it. I'm gonna replace the cat with a 2.5" high flow and run 2.5" the rest of the way. Any suggestions on a good cat and muffler? I don't want it to be really loud, the quieter the better actually.

I run the Magnaflow cat on my '98. Haven't had any problems out of it.
I have the 3-chamber Flowmaster on mine. It isn't very loud, but there are quieter ones out there on the market.

Flowmaster has very loud ones, and they are supposed to have extremely quiet ones. I only know about loud though.

How's your exhaust manifold? If it's looking poopy, you might want to do it all while you are at it.

^ i agree the stock 4.0L manifold sucks A$$ replace it with something after market or just get a better stock one, i have seen those stock ones with the flex pipes on it and hear that there pretty good.

I run the Magnaflow hi-flo cat, works well and was reasonable at around $65 or so. Used to have a Magnaflow muffler too (prior to straight-piping it), and it gave it a nice rumble, but nothing obnoxious. Dual'd out Z71's and whatnot were louder. Deeper tone and a smidgen louder than stock, but still quiet.

Amen to replacing header if you haven't already. Well worth the money spent.
Just got around to putting on the JBA header that I bought a couple of months ago (got tired of the noisy smelly factory one with 5 cracks in it) yesterday, and suddenly I can hear the radio again and not nod off at the wheel. The cracked one will also mess with some of your sensors, such as the O2 and the MAT.
Next I'm putting a new Cat and muffler. Magnaflow hi-flo for the Cat. Considering the Flowmaster Delta 40, or the Super 44, I like the sounds of them. According to their website, the delta 50 is much quieter.
**JeeperMatt - which Mag hi-flo cat did you put on? Got the PN# ?

I used Magnaflow #23226. It's a direct fit, so I didn't have to worry about welding on an O2 bung or anything.
And like I said earlier, I have the Flowmaster Delta 50 on my '98. It has a nice growl when you get on the gas, but overall not TOO loud.

Not sure on the PN bud, pretty sure it was the 23226 that Renegade mentioned. It's already setup for an O2 sensor and whatnot, although I just capped mine off as I'm OBD1.

Thanks guys, I ended up putting a Flowmaster 50 on it with a Magnaflow cat. It sounds pretty good especially with the 2.5" pipe, gives it a nice deep tone but isn't too loud. As for my manifold it still looks ok. Id like to put some headers on it some day just gotta wait for the $$. Plus mines an '01 with those 2 mini cats, they make headers for them just not many that Ive found.

That's the exact setup I have on mine (aside from the mini cats) and I love the sound out of mine. Glad you're happy with it.

The drone really isn't TOO bad. Of course, I also have a poly transmission mount, so that transmits noise through the cab too.

Great info. That is the set up that I will probably go to. My only concern was the same as bowcephus. The inner cab drone. Are there any you tube vids with this set up?
