Is there a kit to relocate the oil filter? I hate how its mounted. I gets oil all over everything.

There was one listed for renix applications that was cheaper, I think... Maybe I'm thinking of the same one, but the prices have gone up? I should have bought it then...
I'd probably add an accumulator if they were affordable (haven't looked into that), since you've got to do the plumbing for the remote filter anyways. Oh, the hoses in the kits are normally too short to really put the filter anywhere useful...

It isn't JUST that. I didn't state why I wanted one entirely. The renix filter is mounted inverted (ports on the bottom), which is just plain wrong. Go look at any equipment that runs disposable filters, or even look at any aircraft with the ultra-bling machined body filters with a cleanable or disposable element, they're all mounted with the ports on the TOP. The problem is that the filter can and will drain itself if the ports are not on the top. This leads to oil starvation during a start, and an even longer time to get pressure when cold starting. Plain bearings hate not being oiled, it kills them in a hurry. With the renix setup, a guy can rotate the filter adapter to match the HO. Then the filter is sideways, so at least it can't drain completely and doesn't spill as much when you change it. And some people hate oil leaks and dumping oil in general. Oh, and it's easier to run a bigger filter. And like I said, to plumb in an accumulator. Which most people don't need, but, heh, some people drive with their vehicle on its side...

It definatly can't help. It's a design flaw, for certain... Personally I don't see it as any sort of a 'must-do' mod as there's lots of 4ohs still ticking around with a billion hard miles on them. But, if a guy really wants to be able to count on his equipment, he has to give it a fighting chance.

Where would you mount a remote filter?

Probably the firewall, it's a bit of a toss-up as space is somewhat limited. Perhaps in the general area of the heater core pass-through or the blower motor. Or, where the charcol canister is/was (in that area), if it would fit. I hadn't decided yet, I was going to either buy the kit and wing it, or buy the filter it takes and mock it up to see if it would fit. I've seen it mounted on the driver's side inner fender, but that's a lot farther away.

This is a great thread. I have a 92 HO in my 89 and it uses all the Renix equipment. THe oil filter is upside down and it makes sense what you are saying about the oil draining and getting a dry start.
Mine taps something fearful when I start it for about the first second or 2. Drives me nuts! I was thinking my oil pump might be plugged but I'm going to try rotating the adaptor and see if that helps at all. If not a relocation sounds like it might be worth a shot. Thanks for posting this.

Are we sure the filter "drains"?? I've had two Rennys, both in the 190,000 mile range. Niether of them ever made a tick of any kind, and both built oil pressure as quick as any other engine I've been involved with. With that kind of milage, I don't think there is a starving issue of any kind. If there was a starving issue, we wouldn't see all these Renny XJs still on the road. Let's face it, Renny or HO, the 4.0 is one of the greatest engines ever built!! I just have not ever had any problems with this issue, and was wondering....

I have heard of plenty of renix 4.0's throwing rods which could be a result of this oil filter issue. But its hard to pin point an exact reason for such things.
