Changing my all wheel drive to two wheel drive
Can I remove the front drive line on my full time all wheel drive Cherokee to improve mileage on my freeway commute ? I'm unable to afford a smaller vehicle at this time. The fuel consumption is eating me up. Thanks, Welder

they make all wheel drive grands???
what year is it?
i would assume that you can full your front driveshaft to allow everything to spin freely BUT this may cause you to burn up the clutches in your transfercase ... not a hundred percent sure there but im sure somone else will chime in

the clutches in the transfer case would be spinning anyway.
removing the front driveshaft won't fix it. I'm assuming he's talking about dropping a 2wd crossmember into it. Doable, not recommended. your computer will go ape****.
just go lighter on the skinny pedal.

if its all wheel drive
is it ifs?
lighter on the skinny pedal
change your oil regularly (make sure its not too dark)
and when changing your oil use a crank case cleaner (its not recommended but personally i use a 50/50 mix of deisel and atf for about 3 minutes of idling)[i saw a really big decrease of engine sludge and gross carbon buildup in the oil pan and valve cover]
use a decent fuel system cleaner every 3-10k miles(bg 44k works awesome but is like 20 bucks a can)
theres other tips and tricks to get your fuel economy down but those are the bigger ones

I had a ZJ that was awd too. If you want to fix it so it will run in 2wd, the best way is to do a t-case swap or depending on your t-case, change out the guts in it with another as this will not mess with your vehicle unless maybe it is newer. I am only familiar with GC up to about 2001 so you need to check into it first. And th eanswer is yes, if you swap it out to a 2wd, you will get a little better gas mileage depending on your driving habits. The previous post about not removing your driveshaft because it won't make a difference is pretty accurate. It may improve a little but only marginally and not worth the hassle.

x2 on the transfer case swap. I've seen a few local V8 ZJs that dumped the 249 for 242s and 231s.

This thread confused me. I have a 98 grand cherokee with all wheel drive but you can also switch it to 2 wheel drive. Do they make models that dont?

Maybe this will help clear things up.......the Grand Cherokees that came with full time 4wd can be changed over to 2wd, even the V8 versions. If I remember right all of the V8 GC came with full time 4wd and if they made the 2wd version it was not very many......the 4.0 GC came with mostly 2wd options.
To make your GC into a Jeep with 2wd option on the t-case, you have to swap to another style of t-case such as 231 or 242.....this will save you a lot on gas mileage and power when in 2wd.

It won't really help mileage. It only kicks into 4wd (or AWD if you prefer) when the rear starts to slip. When the rear has traction the vehicle operates in 2wd (Or RWD if you prefer) A lot of people get confused about the different systems out there, but it is not actually driving all the wheels all the time.
Hope that helps a bit.
Later.

It would possibly be of help but you did not mention as to what t-case you were refering to. The 242 and 231 have full time 4wd options

Specifically, I was referring to the NV247 (Quadra-Drive) Transfer case, but is also true of other transfer cases when in "Full-Time" four wheel drive.
EDIT: 231 was was not an option for WJ's, although I'm not sure what model we're discussing here, sooo...
