Why only the grand and not the regular xj? Our tanks are in the back too and same goes for the wrangler, except the JK's.
Maybe convince chrysler to give every grand/xj a beefy rear gas tank skid made of 1/4" steel that bolts to the unirail in 8 spots on each side.......muhahahah.

Hmm.... 3 million GC's. 44 crashes that can be linked to the issue... If they are all so worried about it, I like Mudd's idea!

Only... .0015%.. I am ok with those odds.. well that and I don't drive a GC.
Sounds like the whole Chevy gas tank scare in the 80s... but that turned out to be rigged.

How about the Pinto Gas Take issue...?
I wonder if it is related to US models only, or Canadian and other foreign models too...My tank came with a nice skid plate to protect it...

I think we should all write our politicians demanding new gas tank skids. Seems they are always looking for ways to spend money anyways

Where do we sign up for our free gas tank skid plates? I like that idea.

I consulted for Chrysler during those years with vehicle inspections for fires, I NEVER inspected any GC for this alleged defect.

Well with the chances so low of a potential fire, I'll trust my trailer hitch to rip apart any rear end intruders that may puncture the tank. It's interesting that some say their model came with a skid plate. I had to replace the hanging hardware on the tank not to long ago and the job was easy. If there were skid plates on the G. C. how would you see if your hanging hardware had failed and the tank was hanging down? It would probably just rest on the skid plate.

Well, I'm new here, but I've spent over 20 years investigating traffic collisions for a large, metropolitan police agency in the SoCal area--and the only GC I've ever come across that was torched was one that was lit for insurance fraud. ROLLED is how I usually find them, LOL! Didn't stop me from buying my '01 Limited!

Now I know y it was so freakin hard to find a gc gas tank skid at my local jy, everyone else took them. Like mudd said y jst the gc, y not the xj or other jeeps that have there gas tanks there. I seen more xj's n wj's in jy for other accidents then fires. More head on collisions to be exact n the tanks were never harmed. if i were to get some ass to hit the back of my xj, i think ill destroy his radiator, condensor, hood, grille, and maybe his wallet if he hits my tow hitch. thing sticks out like 10" from my bumper.
pic of my Volvo tow hook
