Default How to open Transfer Case

Just found this site - love it..I'm a jeep fanatic - owned a J-10, 76 Wagoneer, 85 Wagoneer, 2 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee's.

I am replacing the front drive shaft, was producing noise at speeds over 35 to 40mph under load - was able to get underneath vehicle and move the shaft and feel play in the front Transfer Case end of shaft.

My transfer case is also leaking - gasket has gone out (100k) - so figured while I'm replacing the Drive-line - might as well fix the transfer case, new gasket, new Shift Fork pads - however on this 2000 Grand, I can't seem to seperate the transfer case..I have it about 2 inches apart - but that's as far as it goes - does this one have a retaining pin/clip that is holding me up from splitting the two apart?

Thanks -

It should pop right off there. There are no clips on the tail shaft. Push it back in and get it coming again. The momentum will probably do the trick. Tcase weighs 65-75# depending on which you have.

Thanks for the quick reply - that's what I thought as well..I've opened older transfer cases (NP models) and they just pop apart - I'm not in front of it, but I think it's the NV247 model - so wasn't sure if a clip was holding it..I'll try it again. -

I should mention - it's not seperating it from the transmission - I already have it out, it's actually Opening the transfer case - splitting it apart.

Figured it out - had a snap clip on the main gear - removed that - slid apart perfectly - of course it doesn't help when you have a bunch of shavings inside. So it's an NP247 not NV - and the Range Fork is chewed up - I don't see any other issues in the case besides that one..so of course, start one job, and end up rebuilding everything..murphys law huh - :- )

Now I see what you mean. Yes you start with the tail housing then work your way in. Yes there is a snap ring as you have already found out.

There is another way to get it open.

But I think you will only find out this way if you forget to put fluid back into your transfer case.

I know its a 242

Just trying to lighten things up for ya, Hope it all works out well with the WJ. Good luck
