Default Jeep ZJ-Clunking Noise from Back of Vehicle

When I go over a bump in my '98 Jeep Grand Cherokee there is a strange clunking noise coming from the hatch. My hatch is on tight and I have tightened the screws around the plastic paneling on the hatch and this still doesn't seem to help. Anyone ever have this problem with their ZJ?

Might be a worn out shock bushing... unless your positive it's coming from the hatch.

Check your bumper mounts too. One of mine is completely rusted off, and it bangs around in there when I go over bumps.

Do you have a hitch? If you do and you leave the ball mount in it it will make a clunking sound, I leave my hook in mine and it will drive you crazy sometimes but I just cut the tunes up louder. Just a thought.

It is probably one of your two rubber rear hatch bump stops. open the hatch and look on both sides for them. the are adjustable. either they are gone or need adjusting. they are little threaded rods with rubber at the end.

Well I found the bump stops but I have no clue how they can be adjusted. They didn't seem as though they were able to be adjusted in any way. How would I go about adjusting them? The rubber did look a bit torn and worn out though. Thanks!

The ones on my 98 were mashed all to pieces. I ordered mine from here and they worked great.

New Jeep Grand Cherokee Parts: Tailgate & Related Items

They are about mid way down the page. I have dealt with this co. several times and was always well satisfied. I haven't checked the dealer but I assume the dealer will be higher but for s***s and giggles you might want to give them a call.

That site is new to me , Thanks!
Nice Job. I thought they were adjustable but maybe not. My old was a 93 and I see that part # is for 94 -98 so maybe a different style for 93,

OP Make sure you orders the parts further down on the list, the ones for the tail gate and not the ones for the Glass by mistake.
