rust and dust
hey guys what is the best way to take care of rust? it's not bad at all, only a couple crumb sized spots and i want to keep it that way.
also where i got in my accident my tail gate got all scratched up and i want to keep it from rusting.
my idea is to just sand it down and re-paint it..any other suggestions, or sealants that work well?

raceing is you and your car against the clock not the other car , in fact there are no people in the stands , no one else is at the track but you and the tree

thanks man, would regular rustoleum paint work instead of spray paint? just some spots are in areas where overspray would not be welcome haha but if not taping off and covering with plastic bags isn't the end of the world

the problem with rust is that it expands and lifts paint. You also live in the land of eternal winter salt water. If you see pin holes on the outside, then it is a good chance it is all the way through and actually coming from the inside. This is a very common thing called "cancer". When body men deal with this they use a compound to neutralize the rust and stop it from doing its thing. I suggest you check out POR 15
Here is a link: Stop Rust POR15
Contact them and see what they say. Everybody in the street rod world swears by this stuff.

thank you i appreciate it. does that mean i am going to have to sand away more paint than the actual pin hole?

rustoleum is supposed to nutralize the rust ... and i dont see why a can of paint would be any differnent than a can of spray paint
what ever you choose good luck

It might. It depends on whether the paint around it is lifting or not. If it is, it is a larger hole waiting to happen. Either way, you have to neutralize the rust. Contact them for their advise. They have some small kits that should be affordable to a waitress. Also, I would get some touchup paint from the dealer to do the small area so it will match what you have.

well the paint isn't lifting anywhere except slightly at the base of the tailgate where most rust is found anyway and yeah i emailed then asking what they suggest so we will see, it will probably have to wait til summer anyway because i cant take a couple days to keep it in a barn cause i don't have another car to drive

Good for you. Once all the guys in your town find out you can wrench, they will all be knocking on your door to do their repairs
