Default Strange problem with my zj

My 98 grand cherokee is leaking water on the front passenger side. The floor gets soaked every time I drive it. I dry it all up and the next day I drive it its soaked again. Its not my radiator, or heater core. I think its my ac condensation but I cant find where its coming from? A mechanic told me he would have to remove my whole dash to get to the hose that the condensation is suppose to run through. Has anyone had this problem before, or have any ideas what else could be causing this?

Theres a condensation drain hose right below the ac stuff in the engine bay. Make sure its not clogged with debris causing water to back up into your cab. Its a black hose hanging there on the bottom of your firewall on the passenger side.

Thats what I thought. The mechanic said the only way to get to this hose is to remove my entire dash. Is this true? Or is there an easier way to get to it? I found a small round plug under the glove box and there was a little water dripping from it. Is this connected to that hose?

Thanx guys.

I do not remember on the ZJs but on the XJs there is a small rubber end coming out of the firewall on the passenger side that drains the water from the system. Look for something like this and then you may be able to squit some water from a hoe up there to wash out the plugged pipe. Either that or, take a coat hanger and gently put it up the hole and feel for the plug to get it out. If none of that works, you may have to take the dash out to get to it. It really is not that hard to remove the dash though but I believe there are some clips to watch out for on the top. If you want to do it yourself, try going to a junk yard and find one like yours and take it apart and then you will know how it works.

I know the small round plug that your talking about its right under the glove box. I stuck a air hose in it and a long wire to unclog it. Then put the plug back on and sealed it. Im still getting water on the the passenger side I dont know where its coming from? The plug isnt leaking anymore. Still my passenger floor board gets soaked everytime I run the ac?

Ummmm, I do not want to tell you this, but you truly may have to take the dash apart to see what is going on. This will take a weekend to do if you have never done it but if you have someone else do it.....it is gonna cost some $$$$. Like I said, go to a junk yard and pull a dash out there so you know what you are looking at before attempting to work on yours.

95 Grand Cherokee AC drain pan leaking? - JeepForum.com

Check that out. It offers some advice.

Also Condensate Drain on Jeep Grand Cherokee (which is contained within the first url)

When my 95ZJ leaked, I also had a freon leak through the evaporator and a mold problem in the plenum so removal of the dash and plenum was the fix that I used. The factory closed cell foam gasket that surrounds the plenum nipple is prone to deterrioration so I slathered the new doughnut gasket with Permatex Hylomar. It's a gelatin that never hardens and is impervious to water, mold, gas, oil, etc. That was in 2005. No leaks since.

If it ever does leak, I'll be cutting into the firewall just like the guy with the red Laredo. Chances are, though, I'll fashion some sort of stiff cover attached with self tapping screws in an attempt to restore some of the original strength to that weak portion of the passenger cabin into which I had cut a hole.

Once the plenum drain nipple can be accessed, you can put a washer and sealant around it, or attach a drain hose.

Hi . I own a 98 Grand Cherokee and have the same leakage. I made a small hole into the drain plastic below the glove box and could remove dust. Then watering was cleaned and drains ok. But some weeks later again. The mechanic insist to remove the dash because the truck is so old, 12 years, that dust, rain, mud, etc. has been accumulated in the aperture of the evaporator. So that area is clogged and the evaporator must be totally dirt and inefficient, therefor e is a chance to clean. But with care otherwise the evaporator will be broken.
Can someone precise me where is the drain hose behind the fire wall, passenger side?? how can I reach it?
Thank you
