I had a little bit of a problem with the "universal fit" of the flares from the factory.. of course I had to go and make my own cuts... managed not to mess it up THIS time... The 1st picture is of the rear bumper.. where the bumper is fastened to the rear quarter there was a rough fit that I felt needed a little more room for the flare to fit correctly.. This is a 1998 GC ZJ by the way... The instructions that came with the flares were based on a '95 or earlier ZJ.

For future reference, after a "rough" fitting has been done and the holes are marked, save yourself some anguish and time by attaching the trim rubber to all the flares before you start attaching the flares... I couldn't tell you how many times I had to remove the flares after I had them on to get the rubber trim on.. second picture is of the inner fromt flare. I had a rough time getting/finding the right spot on the flare and on the quarterpanel to attach to.. last two pctures are of miscellaneous cuts/mods to the flares to get them to fit correctly on my '98.. the rear lower rocker panel flare piece is made for an extra 1/2" to 3/4" gap... I had to change a few angles to get it to fit correctly... the same with the last picture... the assembled rear quarter panel flare doesn't fit the bumper very well, so.... PS... be careful when your cutting the rear door paneling... make sure you take your time make small grind/cuts..

Damn Dan, She is looking nice. are those the rims I sold you? If so they cleaned up pretty nice. Maybe I shoulda kept them... Anyway, did you see my new paint job? ain't she purdy? When you comin back out this way? I have been thinking of going to the badlands in october, and then again for winterfest eleventy! any way, Andy still never got his fixed, it's still sittin at Reeders. I guess Noel doesn't want to mess with it. I told him to take it elsewhere, but it'll prob sit till snow starts to fall. then he'll get her fixed.
yeah, So nice flares, tires, and RIMS!

Yup she is and yes they are... not bad for $50 bucks and some primer and paint.. yea it took a few days of wirewheeling the rust and chrome bubbles off the rims.. and then some primer and flat black in a can... but worth it all in all, I just wish i went with some 32" or 33"s I think it would have been better in the long haul. Though I have about another 45,000 miles before I get the bigger one's on. Probably have a different lift by then. I love Jeeps and I love camo... she sure is purdy, though I think a digital pattern would've looked nicer, but I like it all the same.. Don't think I'll make it for the badlands in October, but I do belive I'll be around for winterfest.. saw the feature on the park in JP magazine a few months back.. are you in that picture of like 80 XJ's? I talked to andy today and it doesn't sound good.. well THANKS FOR THE RIMS and I'll see ya in November... sweet paint!

looks good mann Your brother Mike showed me some pics a little while back. I like how you posted install pics I was wondering how much cutting was involved. I was looking at the flairs from Iceland offroad but was turned off by all the hacking that was involved. keep up the good work

WOW yours looks so good it makes me want to buy a zj lol... were those fender flares made for a ZJ? do they just fit right on? did you do any trimming on the body itself?

These fender flares are model specific, well, at least a time span specific... I do like the look and legal practicallity for DD use. I didn't wanna get pulled over 'cause someone got a rock or two through their windsheild. I thought they were more designed for the earlier ZJ(93-95) with the extra rocker panel cladding/paneling, and not so much for the same color/redesigned door paneling of the 97-98's.. For a look at the amount of trimming involved just page up a few times and look at the install pics... and yes... you should get a ZJ...

Hell Yes! I posted up pick of my sons ZJ on this thread. and as of today. That jeep I posted Picks of is MIne. That means I am putting that Proto Fab
Winch bumper and Bush Wacker fender flairs on MY 5.9
Thanks for the picks, because I love the way it looks and I cant wait to get started tomorrow.
Your ZJ wears them well.
That will set me up for 35's, I am geared for it. But I still don't know if I want bigger then 33's.
What is your next Mod on your ZJ. for some reason I have always been a fan of white.

Nice! Big Ups! Really stoked with my bushies, and cant wait to get to 33's. Im personally not that into the protofab style bumpers, but hey, to each their own, right? um, what happened? your son find a new rig? or did that beast finally hit the crapper?
As for the "wing": I got it off of some dude on ebay. It's made by the same company that makes my rain visors for the main cabin windows. I got it thinking it would work the way its supposed to. It was supposedly designed for some downdrafting over the rear hatch window. I wanted it because i thought it would help to keep the mag-chloride and road grim off my rear window. Alas, It doesn't work for $h!t, but it fit the color scheme I was shooting for with this ZJ whiteness, and i did some drilling to the hatch. So I decided to keep it on there.
As for the next mods I wanna get done to her: a Throttle Body grind, get the head ported, maybe a high flow ehaust, a high flow header, and I was hoping to upgrade to a Dana 44a like you were suggesting, and perhaps gearing to a 4.11 set. She's gonna be my DD for another couple of years and I want more MPGs outta her. I'm hoping for another 5-6 MPGs, and I think i can get there with a few mods. I've been researching some tranny combos with this IL6, and thinking of upgrading from a 42re to a 44re, or maybe a 46re when this tranny goes to the crappa. I'll probably get a better torque converter when I do. Definatly a real lift.. thinking 3.5" - 4" with all the bells and whistles. I'd eventually like some kind of digital macro/micro snow camo paint job. thinking that'll do it FOR NOW... or at least until I am employed again?
p.s. Thanks for the bumper cut idea, it helped out the looks/functionality alot. I was wondering if I'll need to regear both axles when I do upgrade? I do drive at highway speed in 4-high at times during the winter months, and wondering if regearing HAS to be done to both axles... i think i kinda have to right? will I have to upgrade the front axle as well? or can I fit 4.11 gears in a dana 30?

The front dana 30 will handle the 33's fine with 4.11. I am running the dana 30 Aussie locked with 4.56 gears. You should already have the U-joint axle up front v.s the CV half axle shafts all the V-8s came with. However, some I-6 If they had the 249 full time transfer case came with CV axles half shafts. You should be just fine up front to re gear that axle and run 33's .
As far as having both axles geared differently, In most cases the answer is NO. However, You can get away with re gearing one axle at a time and still drive it. but you better not put it in 4 wheel drive. One exception, if it were an emergency the 242 has the full time 4x4 position where the transfer case acts like an open diff front to rear (only in Full time 4x4 Hi with the 242). Example/if you were stuck in 2wd and needed to get out that would be the only position you could use. and get away with it. If you go to Part time 4x4 hi, or 4 low. then its just like the 231, locked front to rear. and with a different gear ration front to rear that would be extremely bad.
What I am saying is,, If you want to re gear one axle at a time and still drive it , you can only if you leave it in 2wd. In fact I would even go as far as take out the front drive shaft to ensure you do not mess up.
As you can tell I have my bumper on . I bought my sons jeep because the trans is shot. and he is deployed and currently into go fast cars that save at the pump. My gain. He will be back into wheeling without a doubt. It is just not the time for him right now.
Here is My bumper. the flairs will go on maybe as early as this week. I hope it comes out well with the snorkel in the way.
I like the way yours came out that's for sure. Thanks for the tips.
