I have a 1990 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4.0L. No ABS. What is proper brake pedal operation for the vehicle? How far should the pedal drop when the car is started? How close to the floor should the brake pedal go during normal braking? How much brake pedal play or travel should there be when applying the brakes?.

Hmmm, kind of hard to describe. The pedal should always feel firm, but not to the point where it doesn't want to move.

What are you feeling when you use the brakes? It may be easier to describe what you're feeling than for us to guess. Give a good description.

Well, it'll drop about 1/8th of its travel when the vacuum boost comes on. Normal braking should leave you with plenty of space before you hit the floor, and you should NOT be able to bottom the pedal right to the floor even if you've got the legs of a powerlifter. It should always feel firm, no spongy or softy stuff.

Realize it isn't a sports car.
