he emailed me this q today:

"When I put my 1994 ck sport in 4wheel there is a very loud banging noise and the whole truck shudders. I had a blazer a while ago and it had a similar problem which turned out to be the T-case chain. My jeep has 200,000 on it and afaik the chain is original. Is there a way to find out for sure if its the chain. "

what can he do..

You could remove the front DS and see how far you can rotate the output yoke on the TC.

There shouldn't be alot of play in the TC chain, if you can rotate the output yoke alot, it is the TC chain. Especially with that many miles.

My .02 worth.:hi:

There is a normal 1" or so of rotation in the driveshaft when parked. If anymore than that, there could be a problem

ok he checked the DS today and there is lots of play in it, at least 3 inches so there is a good chance the chain is bad you think? he can get a chain for $25 from a T-case that has 10,000 miles on it, do you guys think that's a good deal?

I may be mistaken but isnt bad ujoints also a cause for a DS with excessive play?
Can be but not 3" worth of play. Could be the chain. I would check it out first before replacing it. You can split the case while it's under the vehicle and check the internals.
