I put a code reader on my 1999 Cherokee 6 cyl and got code P1694.
The vehicle will not start.
Anybody know what this code is?

Ok, this is what i found out.

P1694
Fault In Companion Module
No CCD/J1850 messages received from the powertrain control module-Asian transmission.

P1694 (M)
No BUS CCD Messages Received from ECM
Bus communication failure to PCM.

What do I need to do to fix it?

I replaced the crankcase position sensor and all is now well.
It turns out that when the CPS shorts (and it was), the computer
shuts down to prevent damage to itself. As a result, no communication (P1694).

Thanks jfxj67.

According to the thread that you literally quoted word for word, its the cps.

Sounds like an intermittent faulty CPS. Have you tried testing it? I would also check the voltage to the connector. The issue could be the PCM, TCM or a short in the harness.
