My guess is that if a '97+ center console can be retrofitted to fit a pre-'96 XJ, then a pre-'97 console can be made to fit a post '97 model. I guess if you've got the time, patience, and maybe some fabbing skills it'd work just fine.
I guess the only way to really figure that out is to get an older type of console and compare it to your newer console.
From looking at some pictures of the old interior vs the new interior, it looks as if making a "hybrid" from the two may be pretty hard. The front of each console is designed differently, and it looks as if the old console would interfere with the dashboard assembly near the cigarette lighter/defrost switches because it slants upward.
