I have a 1999 jeep cherokee and the headlights work perfect on dim but when you flip them on bright they turn completely off. I put a new dimmer switch in it and still the same thing. Any ideas on whats wrong?

There are typically 2 filaments in your head light so you probably need to change out the bulbs. I'm not sure about your year but typically you can pull out the whole light assembly and when you get the lens off you can just change out the "brights" bulb. If you can't get the light apart you just need to change out the whole thing. It's $10 at auto zone.

you might also need to check you fuse or relay. low beams are suppose to turn off when you hit the hi's so the bulb wont over heat. also are you runnin a sealed beam or h4 conversion head lamps.

Just put sealed beam hid's in it. But i had the problem with my stock headlights too. So i know it aint the bulb. Its either a bad connection or a fuse or relay. I dont have an owners manual so i have no idea where the fuse or relay is at. And it is a 1999 model

HIDs don't come sealed beam, u would have t do an h4 conversion first then swap in HIDS into ur jeep. Also HIDs can't do lo's n hi's since they are strictly single filament. To do a hi/lo setup you would have to put a diode inline to make ur hi's t work. Let me know since I've done this to my 01

In the engine bay n if they came sealed beam, how would you hook up the igniter plugs to the bulb n how would u be able to bo hi and low with out the use of a magnet to either move the flap like in a projector head light or pull the bulb back in the after market kits.

reason i know is cuz ive been doin HID's for the past 10 yrs n hi/lo HID's came onto the market in oem in the later BWM n Audi's n the Nissan Murano also has them.

Idk man these hid's have a light that plugs into the back of them and they have their own ballats for each head light. I believe thats what their called. And i have a friend who has the same set up and his have both high and low beams. I had this problem with the stock headlights too

this will help u do the hi lo hid setup on the cheap
http://www.cherokeetalk.com/forum/f68/you-think-its-too-much-lightin-15681/

as for ur issue, ur best bet is to get a test light n see if ur gettin any power to ur ur hi beam side of ur h4 plug. if ur not gettin signal. the fuses are actually located inside on the passenger side kick panel n the fuses are # 3 and #16. they are both 10amp fuses

I checked the fuses and they are good. It could be a relay i guess. Or it might just be that the lights are wired up wrong. I have 10k hid lights and they are supposed to have high n low beam. I had sq motor sports wire them up for me because i dont know jack **** about wireing, but now you cant just push in your light switch (pull knob) to turn the lights off. You have to push in the pull knob and then flip your dimmer switch to bright or turn the ignition off to turn your headlights off but your park lights will turn off when you push in the pull knob. I dont understand it... before i had the hid's installed my bright lights would not work but they would turn off when you pushed in the pull knob now they wont even do that. Any ideas on whats wrong?

Take out all the hid wires n do it yourself. The things wit shops is they jst wire things up to how the instructions say or to what they did to another car/truck gettin the same thing. There 2 ways to install HID's into a jeep, one is to take out the time delay relay n wire it up direct. The other is addin a relay to each light to make them work n then addin a diode goin from hi to lo so that when you flick on ur hi, ur bulb will turn on. If you look at the write up I did, I basically did the same setup as the aftermarket HID kits but usin my own relays, diodes, wires n plugs. The only plug I used from the kit is the one that triggers the HID feature on the bulb. There some pics missing but if u have any other issues, let me know. As for the hi's not workin, u have to trace wires n conectors down, could be your switch, a relay, the column switch could be fualty.

I put a new colum switch in it and i put a new pull knob switch in it about 3 months ago. Im thinkin maybe it has a bad ground or a bad relay somewhere cuz my stock lights wouldnt work on bright either. N sometimes they would work n sometimes they wouldnt before they completely quit. As far as wirein the lights up myself i cant do because i dont understand how electricity work at all. I wouldnt even know where to start

That could be the problem, could be the ground or a pinched wire or unseated wire. as for the lights, take a pic of both sides along with the battery and i can help you out. you may have the hi/lo setup that has a small black box near the battery that controls your lights. that would be a form of relay but after runnin that setup in my jeep i noticed that the light output was less then when i ran them with my relay setup for reasons bein they use smaller gauge wires for the lights. Makin your own relay isnt that hard n ive made a diagram on how to wire one up along wit how to do a hi/lo relay setup. It jst takes some time and you can get ur system workin again. let me know whats up if u run into a wall of confusion.

Ok ill take pics. And mine does have a black box by the battery too. I just cant find the headlight relay. Its not under the hood and i looked under the dash and there are like 2 or 3 relays under there but their not marked on what they are for
