I just inherited a '96 SE 4.0L. It was purchased new in Pittsburgh, then a salvage title issued for it in Pennsylvania in 1997. I called PA DOT to ask why the salvage title was issued, but their records from 1997 were purged years ago. My uncle bought it at auction and kept it in West Virginia, then Utah, then Wilmington, NC, until he died. Then my dad kept it until he died. Now it's mine. Only 69,000 miles. Interior is generally in good shape. The paint is in horrible shape. I doubt either my uncle or father ever put it through a car wash. But the only mechanical concern is there a good bit of rust underneath on parts that weren't painted. Have replaced many parts in the brake system. And I think the only real remaining concern about rust will be the exhaust system, which will need replacement someday.

Anyway, I likely will keep it until it stops running, which could be a while, based on previous experience with my grandfather's 1976 (?) Cherokee (which my father unfortunately unloaded when he inherited this Jeep). I needed a 4WD vehicle, and didn't relish spending real money on a used 4Runner, which is what I likely would have done eventually.
