Ok got a question..Based on info I found I am thinking I can goto the JY and get the front axles off a 96-99 and get the advantage or larger u-joints.. Am I correct in my thinking? or would this require more mods then just the axles? or would I be better off trying to find a 91-95 with ABS?

Just get the shafts and put in yours. You can also use the shafts from a TJ...
X2 because you know the history of the rest of your axle while you would be guessing at the condition of the axle housing at the JY.

Oh yeah I meant just the shafts sorry..I should have worded that better..:) Thanks for the confirmation..Now my next trip to the JY I can get new shafts along with maybe talking em down on the 8.25's they have from a 98 and 99 XJ..:)

Here's a question as well...On the 8.25 rearends is the only different between the older ones and newer ones the spline count? Is the housing and tubes all the same?

Correct, 8.25 only diff is the splines(so it makes the carriers different)
Ah so you can't just get an 8.25 off say a 92 and just toss 29 spline shafts in, you'd also have to change the carrier? So if I got one of the older 8.25's out of the pre 29 spline era could I just upgrade the gears and install a locker then upgrade to 29 spline at that time? Since I assume when you put in the locker you are replacing the carrier?

In the majority of cases when you regear you need to change out the carrier. But if you dont already have a c8.25 I would look for a 29spl axle.

Oh I will but I am going to 4.10's before I put it in anyways and a locker...My main thing is this if I get a newer one I am gonna replace the carrier anyways...So if I can get an older one and save some initial cash then I might as well just get the older one since the carrier is getting replaced and I also plan on some nice upgraded aftermarket axle shafts..plus a disc brake conversion and what not.

Really, to run 29 spline shafts in the older corporate 8.25 27spline axle housings...all you need is the side (spider) gears and 29 spline shafts out of a '97 or newer xj...
