Modern XJ Interior?

1043 Views 43 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  warriorsuspension
Hey guys I have been looking at buying a 97 XJ, and I love everything about it except the interior. The dash is ugly, the seats are ugly, the bench is ugly, and so on. Is there a way that I can make the interior look like a new car (I am not talking about detailing or new stock parts, I mean like making it have a modern interior)? Could I buy a totaled car for cheap and rip out all the interior and stick it in the XJ? Is there a kit to do what I am looking for?

Now there is a question we don't get every day. You can bolt in some Grand Cherokee seats in front, but the rear seats won't fit without modification. I managed to find some WJ seats and did some fabrication and now have 8 way leather seats. I found an XJ rear seat in leather that matched. But beyond that, nothing really bolts in.

Can I rip out the dash and put a newer one in? I am not a huge fan of the way the XJ dash looks stick
I know guys have replaced the front seats with power leather seats from a grand cherokee. But I don't think anything has been done with the dash. You can replace the cluster. or go to www.azzysdesignworks.com and get a new background for your dash cluster. like i did. and hydro dip the bezel and change the bulb colors..

Make the inside look like a completely new car and the outside the same good ol’ XJ cuz the new Cherokees suck but the inside is nice and the old Cherokees are great but their interior sucks
I have never heard of anyone that did that. Just the curve of the windshield alone is unique to different models and would make it impossible to make it look right
Here is a video of someone doing it on an f360 that was a different body style.

The interior doesn’t suck. But you have very limited options as stated. Your only way to achieve what you want is to have a custom shop fab custom fiberglass dash & everything else along with it that you don’t like & it'll cost plenty.

Custom PRP seats will look the most modern & probably be the most comfortable - check those out. Everything else is just dash gauges, radio swap, painting, upholstering, etc.

Or just buy something else to mod like an 04 WJ.

so i can’t just take a new one from a newer car?
if that’s the case, how come people online can?
What exactly do you mean? Like why are people online swapping out an older Ford truck Dash for a newer one? Because in some vehicles you can and some vehicles you can’t. But we are talking about an XJ. If you want a more modern look and you haven’t bought one yet then just buy a more modern jeep like a 99-04 WJ or a 97-01 XJ. A lot less work to just buy a WJ if you like the interior of that. Plus a lot more other features. Personally, my XJ fell into my lap, but if I could I do it all over again I would Have gotten a WJ to start a build with, mainly for interior, space, comfort, usually bigger, axles to mod, etc. but that’s just personal preference.
i want an xj cuz i think modded they look the best
the dash thing i think could be done, just with some modifying and measuring
I bet it’ll rattle like crazy, have issues where it meets the windshield as warriorsuspensions stated, & good luck with the airbags. But if you can make it work you’ll probably be the first unless you can find a photo of one already done. I haven’t seen one on any of the other XJ forums in 13 years though. Let us know how it works out for you.

It’d be easier to have a shop do a custom overlay onto the dash. Just because it’s been done on a Ford truck (that likely has the same/similar enough windshield line, but an updated dash in their next gen) doesn’t mean the same for Jeeps that are older than what you’re looking at.

yeah i would have to modify the heck out of it, but it would be pretty cool
what should i swap with? i was thinking like a salvaged gladiator or a wrecked new grand cherokee
