The interior doesn’t suck. But you have very limited options as stated. Your only way to achieve what you want is to have a custom shop fab custom fiberglass dash & everything else along with it that you don’t like & it'll cost plenty.

Custom PRP seats will look the most modern & probably be the most comfortable - check those out. Everything else is just dash gauges, radio swap, painting, upholstering, etc.

Or just buy something else to mod like an 04 WJ.

What exactly do you mean? Like why are people online swapping out an older Ford truck Dash for a newer one? Because in some vehicles you can and some vehicles you can’t. But we are talking about an XJ. If you want a more modern look and you haven’t bought one yet then just buy a more modern jeep like a 99-04 WJ or a 97-01 XJ. A lot less work to just buy a WJ if you like the interior of that. Plus a lot more other features. Personally, my XJ fell into my lap, but if I could I do it all over again I would Have gotten a WJ to start a build with, mainly for interior, space, comfort, usually bigger, axles to mod, etc. but that’s just personal preference.

I bet it’ll rattle like crazy, have issues where it meets the windshield as warriorsuspensions stated, & good luck with the airbags. But if you can make it work you’ll probably be the first unless you can find a photo of one already done. I haven’t seen one on any of the other XJ forums in 13 years though. Let us know how it works out for you.

It’d be easier to have a shop do a custom overlay onto the dash. Just because it’s been done on a Ford truck (that likely has the same/similar enough windshield line, but an updated dash in their next gen) doesn’t mean the same for Jeeps that are older than what you’re looking at.
