Hey all.
My son took his '96 XJ sport down from Farmington NM to SanAntonio Tx. to visit a freind this weekend.
He is decidedly NOT mechanicly inclined and had a problem with his Jeep.
He said they were going through a fast food drivethrough, and his XJ just died.

Said the guage wasnt past 210, but the hood felt kinda hot when he opened it.
He let it sat for about a half hour thinking it might help to cool down.
(the engine would crank, but not start)
and after sitting a halfhour, turned the key and it fired right up.

After checking through these forums it seems like the CPS is a good culprit.
He said it's at the local Chrysler dealer in SanAntonio right now.

Questions:
IS the CPS most likely the culprit?
Anyone from this area familiar with the S.A. dealers?
(are they good? or typical buttheads?)
Anyone know of a realllllllly good repair shop in this area?
(in case the Mopar guys cant fix it.)

Sorry for such a goofy post, but i'm just worried about the boy.

PS: he said no fluid leaks. so steam or smoke. no bells and whistles going off. no CEL light either.
Just died out for 1/2 an hour. :dunno:

Also said it was fine afterwards.
I'm just worried about his trip back home next wednesday.:brickwall:

You are probably on the right track, it sounds like the CPS and they are good about going out at the worst time. They are easy to replace, sorry he has to have the dealership do the work, it'll cost more. But it's hard when your out of town. Good Luck!! I'm in the DFW area if I can help. If he needs anything, I am 360-gpn on the Lonestar Jeep club forum, or pm me here.

Thanks for the replies!

He called me earlier today and told me their diagnostic said the CPS was going bad.
They ordered a CPS to be installed tomorrow.
And i think i'm gonna buy one to keep in my '97 just in case........
Is the OEM the only place to get one?
Or does NAPA sell a good replacement. Most anything from NAPA is good stuff.

I also priced a new n.s.s..

Talk about DOUBLE YEESH!? $345! ! !

Guess i'll try to get the old one off again once the weather warms a bit.:dunno:

Autozone usually has the NNS for around $230.

Or just go to the JY and get a few, and rebuild them yourself as spares.
