Any takers on this? I've got a water pump that squeals like a stuck pig, its brand new from a rebuild 500 miles ago. I thought it was idler pulleys, changed them, thought it was alt or oba pump, nada. Took a hose and listened closely, sure as s*** its the water pump. I even though it was my brand new psc power steering pump since it has in and put play.... It didnt do that until the second engine rebuild, which I find odd. I believe I used rtv when I sealed it up last time, didnt do that this time, wondering if the impeller is now scraping against the block???? This sucks cause I literally just filled the system with coolant.

Wondering what water pump you did use.
Guessing you played with the tension on the belt.
I use a gauge. My '00 is really picky about that.
And I experimented by doing it with the "Yeah that looks about right" method first.
Then checked with the gauge and was at least 40lbs to loose. LOL.
I used a Napa one and pretty sure it is just a rebranded Gates.
Did come with a lifetime warranty.
I doubt not using the RTV did anything.
I opted to not use the paper gasket the pump came with and bought a FelPro one to use.
Put it in dry too so....
Been a few years now.
Sucks but saving the coolant is easy enough. I did when I replaced mine. Wasn't due for a swap till the following year so...
Did need to filter it though. I took my time, 3 days actually (Hey I am old so give me a break. LOL.), and it attracted a lot of bugs.
Just used one of those paint strainers.

I used a gmb high volume/pressure pump. I bought it in 2019, and it only had a year warranty. Go figure. I did play with belt tension a little bit, it was loose to begin with, so I cranked it up a few notches, still stealing. I dont have the tool to measure tension, but I will pick one up just to eliminate that possibility first. This is literally the one thing keeping me from driving the jeep now. The noise it horrendous.

Quality control isn't what it used to be. It is possible to have a bad pump. I would complain to the vendor

Have you tried replacing the Harmonic Balancer wheel. I have the same problem and am getting ready to do the Harmonics wheel as others out there are finding that to be the culprit.

I ran the engine without the belt, didnt have any squealing. Its not the harmonic balancer. Soon as I hook up it up, I get squealing, though it gets quieter after the engine runs for a few minutes.

I changed the water pump, still have the squealing, im wondering if it is the alt after all.... or maybe its the brand new psc pump I got???? Its driving me crazy!!

There are three places that usually squeal. or cause squealing. One is the alternator, the bearings get dry and will chirp or cause the belt to squeal from too much resistance to rotation. Two is the idler pulley, same thing. Third is the air conditioning pump pulley. You should be able even with bad hearing like mine to at least determine what side it is on. Gotta kind of get your head in there and rotate it so you can get a little sense of direction it is coming from

The problem is the sound echoes around a whole lot, itll sound like its coming from the center, then it seems like its from the driver side, so on n so forth. Both idler pulleys are new and newer, so those are ruled out. Im highly suspicious of the psc pump because there's a lot of shaft play in and out. I almost want to put the old pump on for a minute just to see.... it also wasn't doing this in May when I tore everything down, so all the other components were good to go then, but I know how sitting there can do weird things to everything. Still suspect that my new pump may be the source though. When I put a stethoscope on it, the pump sounds like a growling dog, still can't determine where the squeak comes from with that though.

Alright, psc days the in n out movement is normal as per the way they build their pumps. Apparently they have a floating driveshaft.

So I have new idler pulleys, new ps pump, new water pump, new harmonic balancer.... that leaves the oba pump and alt.... I may have to pull the oba pump next and check it out, may as well pull the alt too and see if I can lube things up a bit.

Figured out the problem, have yet to completely correct it. But the issue does lie with the power steering pump and the pulley. Its misaligned by an 1/8" and caused it to slip a groove on the harmonic balancer. It was also walking off the front edge of the water pump pulley, so I'm sure all that combined is what was causing the screeching. It was bad, my old belt is also ripped, so I get a new one, a little smaller cause I couldn't get enough tension on it. Oh, I also bought a belt tension gauge to boot.

So tomorrow I'm going to the freights to get a pulley install tool so hopefully push that pulley on a bit more. The new belt has at least stopped squealing for now, dont think it'll last long though.

Yup, those pulleys need to be aligned

I have a buddy who works at a machine shop, he ended up running my pulley in a lathe, had him take off an 1/8" off the back of the pulley so I could press it on that much further. It's a pain cause they're only meant to be pressed on flush, they don't exactly make shims to press them on further than that, so I have it pressed on about .100" where it needs to be .125". It only squeals a tiny bit now compared to what it was before. Ill take it.
