There is a new warning put out by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.... as of October 8, 2008

Sherwood brand Pirate's Gold Milk Chocolate coins are being recalled due to the fact that they contain Melamine, the ingredient in milk product that has caused many infant illnesses and deaths in china. These candies are sold at Costco, as well as many bulk and dollar stores. please make sure to check your childrens halloween candy and DO NOT LET THEM EAT THE PIRATE COINS (you know the ones wrapped in the shiny gold foil) and please let other parents know about this!

How did they magically get this stuff in them? Smells like fear mongering to me, but I don't have kids and don't like chocolate... so whatever.

It's not magic. It's economics. China makes everything, and I mean everything, for cheaper than a western company can. China is also rather bass-ackwards, corrupt, and a developing nation. Melamine is metabolised by the body much like protien, and adding it to milk products effectivly increases the amount of protien in it. Unfortunatly, it's also poisonous, especially to younger people.

So, it's a case of cheap chocolate that is made with milk products that were made cheaply in china. Unfortunatly, it's poisonous. But hey, it's cheap!

So...are these candies made in china or just getting chinese kids sick? Doesn't fda approve foods sold in the US, except the stuff specially labeled as "not evaluated by the fda" ?

I have no idea where the candies were made, but I'd assume china as everything is made there. The milk that caused the root problem was definatly made in china, and it has made chinese kids sick.

And FDA evaluation is a scant comfort. Products change, and they may not be reevaluated. Which I think was the issue here, the milk changed but most likely the candies did not otherwise.

There's now way the FDA can inspect every shipment coming into the US. Not possible with the quantities of stuff coming in these days. So be careful, or buy local...

You mean like Maple Leaf?

With all the food issues these days, I am more and more looking at wild game and hand picked beef slaughter as my only sources of meat, and buying a lot more fresh produce right from the farms - the ones that don't use pesticides.

Store-bought crap is just that ... crap!

As for sweets for the kidlets ...yeah, you gotta really be careful where this stuff originates.

All processed meat has its risks. Any processed food of any type does. Why not instead of cold cuts, but some chicken or a roast or a turkey and cook and slice it yourself. We've become a very lazy society. And sometimes bad things happen.

It's perfectly fine fine to buy meat at the major grocery stores...just buy pieces of meat from the butcher section rather then the processed stuff from the deli section.

P.S. Bacon was never effected by the listeria situation. So stick to that and you'll be fine!!!

Anyway, gotta go. Got to get downtown for the Tom Morello show. Chris Cornell is in town too...maybe a surprise guest appearance...? That'd be nifty!
Anyway, that was off topic, so get back on topic.
Later.
