A question: On the ZJ with 4.0L and 42RE tranny, can you change the rear main seal without dropping the tranny?

In my XJ, I can just drop the oil pan and go in that way, but I have no idea if it can be done on my son's ZJ the same way.

94 ZJ Limted - 4.0L, 42RE, NP242 if that helps.

Thanks.

Thanks a lot. That was the answer I was hoping for.

I told my son we could most likely do it that way but that I had to check around first. In the mean time he phoned 3 shops and each one told him they had to drop the tranny and the average estimate was in the $600 range!

Makes me wonder how many other vehicles out there can be done the same way :brickwall:

Most all inline can be and several Chrysler motors with the 2 pc. seal.

From what I've read there is a aftermarket seal in the works that will require you to pull the trany, it's a 1 pc. But those aren't suppose to be on the market till late next year..
