Neutral Safety Switch perhaps?
If the NSS is faulty, it will not allow it to crank.

I had the same problem with my wife's 1996 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 auto trans. Turned out to be the neutral safety switch.I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 auto trans, when you let it sit overnight it stars up and will drive a couple feet and die, after that you have to shift it in Neutral and park a couple of times to get it to crank again. When it is cranking it has no spark. I replaced the coil, plugs, wires, cap and rotor a week ago but still having the problem. Any ideas?
I have a 1995 Grand Cherokee 4.0 that had a similar problem...... the shift cable had worn into the wires of the crankshaft position sensor ( I think that is what it is called.....kind of on top and on front of transmission)..... would start and run for a while then quit......shifting it around a bit would move the shift cable a bit and the sensor would start working again.....though not permanently. Replacing the sensor fixed things. YMMV, but a simple inspection of the wires would be easy to do .....I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 auto trans, when you let it sit overnight it stars up and will drive a couple feet and die, after that you have to shift it in Neutral and park a couple of times to get it to crank again.
