Unbolt the axle end of the shock and compress/extend it. You'll know if it's bad. Any oem or aftermarket stabilizer will work. They are all valved 50/50 so they all work the same. Some are built tough, some are built to rust the very next day, and some are built to look pretty. I run a skyjacker one cuz it's cheap and does what others do. I used to run Old Man Emu on my TJ cuz it had a cover over the shock shaft and that protects it from road debris, which would chip it resulting in the seal getting torn and leak starting. Since i don't do alot of highway driving, i have no need for that $$ stabilizer.

I run a rancho...I think about $30 and it works just fine..As far as knowing do what mud said unbolt it at one end and compress it, if it compresses easily then you need a new one..If you get bump steer then you need a new one.. If it's the stock one then you need a knew one. It's not like shocks where you can do the bounce test..

A decent steering setup can run without one, if you experience bumpsteer without one it means your steering setup is flawed.
The jeeps stock steering is flawed hence the need for the dampener..IMHO the tie rod should go from knuckle to knuckle and the draglink attaches to the tie rod not the other way around but that's just me..:)

My point being is there are a lot of people running without a SD without any problems at all.
